The Columbus Blue Jackets got goalied by a 49 save effort from the San Jose Sharks. The final score of the game was 2-1 in overtime.

First, let’s discuss the theme of the season. Johnny Gaudreau.

One of the Sharks’ ushers, Susie Diaz, got all of the SAP staff members #13 pins to honor the fallen Gaudreau brothers. Diaz unexpectedly passed in October. All Sharks staff that worked the game reportedly wore the pins to honor Diaz and the Gaudreau family.

Classy touch by the organization. Hoping more like this happens for reporting. Onto the gameplay:

Period I

No goal scoring.

Two San Jose minor penalties; one Columbus minor penalty; and offsetting minor penalties occurred.

Columbus took 13 shots; San Jose had just 6.

Period II

Columbus had two minor penalties against.

San Jose opened the scoring with a minute and 11 seconds remaining with a career first. Defender Jack Thompson, part of the Duclair deal last deadline, recorded his first career NHL goal. 2023 first rounder Will Smith recorded his first career NHL assist with the setup. Fabian Zetterlund is pushing to be on the Swedish Four Nation team with his secondary assist.

Period III

Former Blue Jackets’ first rounders Wennberg and Adam Fantilli collected time in the sin bin.

Kirill Marchenko broke through the goose egg to even the game at one all midway through the third period. The Russian right winger’s fifth of the regular season was assisted by Damon Severson and Yegor Chinakov.

Overtime

Alexander Wennberg scored against his first NHL club to earn the game winning goal. His overtime winner was his third with San Jose this season. Zetterlund for his second assist of the evening. Vanecek got his first point with the Sharks on the secondary assist.

Players to Watch

Macklin Celeberini — pointless with a minor penalty in his first game back from injury on opening night. 3 shots on goal. 17 minutes of ice time.

Kevin Labanc — the former Shark had 4 shots on net and one block in 10:16TOI.

Goaltenders

Vitek Vanecek — carried San Jose tonight. 49 saves on 50 shots for a 0.989 save percentage.

Elvis Merzlikins — stopped 25 of 27 San Jose shots for a 0.926 save percentage.

CBJ Three Stars of the Game

1. Krill Marchenko — goal (5)
2. Damon Severson — assist (4)
3. Yegor Chinakov — assist (6)

Next Game

Saturday night against Los Angeles to keep the California trip going.
