The Columbus Blue Jackets have had their end of season run saved by goaltender Jet Greaves earning his second career shutout in the last three games played since his recent AHL recall. Saving all shots faced last night in Philadelphia, Columbus managed to blank the Flyers by the score of three-zip.
Philadelphia traffic was a pileup everywhere getting into the Wells Fargo Center, so much show that the first five minutes of the game were missed by me due to just getting in. On my way into the building, it was comical getting heckled about 896 from Ovi over the weekend in Philly, but my favorite city in PA proves me right everytime.
The opening frame was pretty quiet for the gameplay, a lot of tired of legs and reminding one another this is a divisional rivalry matchup.
Columbus forward Justin Danforth had the opening penalty on Garnet Hathaway; their chirping went back and forth through the game after this. Dmitri Voronkov had the late penalty on Sean Couturier.
Intermission came and went and the beer stick was fun to walk around with and stick tap a few fans with them while others were searching for them in the upper 200s. With it being fan appreciation night, merchandise was 25% off during the game. The Yuengling ticket promotion was ongoing as well, and was a fantastic interaction there too. While in Philadelphia, worth getting the cheesesteak everytime; however, mine did not have onions. It didn’t bother me, but I would’ve taken it with but rushed back to my seat.
The second period started strong as a beautiful feed from Zach Werenski landed on the tape of Dante Fabbro, who wound up his slapshot to beat Samuel Ersson for the opening goal just two and a half minutes into the frame. The few Columbus fans in the building were exploding with cheer while Flyers fans went silent. Fabbro recorded his career high eighth goal and 25th point of the regular season. Monahan also had the secondary assist on the setup of the play as it was shifting back to the blue line.
Tyson Forester had a minor penalty for high sticking on Adam Fantilli, an obvious call from the nose bleeds. Emil Andrae had an interference call on Zach Aston-Reese.
Off the draw, the one timer was set up from from Monahan to Kent Johnson who just ripped it behind Ersson for the two goal lead. The only powerplay goal of the night was Johnson’s 24th goal of the regular season and Werenski had the secondary apple.
Concourse around the second had the biggest line around the Insomnia cookie stand and the bubble hockey games; sadly, for the folks behind me in line, I grabbed the final cookies available.
The third was relatively quiet under Adam Fantilli got the delay of game infraction. Less than a minute after that, he shot in the final goal of the evening in tribute to his grandfather for his first 30 goal season of his career. Kirill Marchenko and former Flyers’ first rounder Ivan Provorov had the helpers.
