Period I
The returning Oliver Ekman-Larsson opened the scoring with the first goal of the Battle of Ontario. At the seven minute mark, the former Cup winner followed the breakout set up by Calle Jarnkrok with the drop pass to Scott Laughton at the blue line; OEL corraled the biscuit and went down Main Street for his first playoff goal with Toronto.
Mitch Marner succeeded on the breakaway from a breakout pass from Auston Matthews for the pending free agent’s first goal of the series.
Drake Batherson got the first Ottawa playoff goal in eight years off the rebound. After the Leafs’ goalie knocked away the initial shot into the corner, David Perron regained the puck and pushed it to Dylan Cozens for the initial shot for the Batherson goal.
Period II
John Tavares capitalized on the Tim Stützle penalty for the former captain’s first of the series from Nylander and Marner.
After being initially called a major, Ridly Greig’s hit was reduced to a minor for cross checking. Halfway through the kill, Gaudette got another cross check on Matthews.
William Nylander scored three seconds into the two main advantage for his first of the postseason from Tavares.
Rough-housing concluded the second period between Tkachuk and Laughton getting coincidental minors with Batherson also getting a minor for roughing on Jarnkrok.
Period III
Ridly Greig brought the road team within two for his first of the postseason with the helpers going to Michael Amadio and Shane Pinto.
Morgan Reilly replied 45 seconds later with some help by Nicolas Robertson.
Matthew Knies recorded another Leafs’ powerplay goal off another cross check by the Sens; Matthews and Marner had each their second assists of the night.
Goaltenders
Anthony Stolarz had 31 saves on 33 shots faced for a 0.939 save percentage.
Linus Ullmark had 18 saves on 24 shots for a 0.775 save percentage.
Players to Watch
Auston Matthews — the Leafs’ captain had two helpers and drew a minor from Sens’ Gaudette for a cross check.
Brady Tkachuk — had a coincidental minors with Laughton; and had 5 shots; 7 hits; and a block and giveaway in 16:58TOI.
