And so it begins, on the back of an embarassing loss to the Dallas Stars Kyle Dubas has dedided to start the anticipated fire sale. Lars Eller will be moving on to a familar location. He will be returning to the Washington Capitals where he had great success, including scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal.

Eller had some decent moments as a Penguin and was certainly more pleasing to watch than many of the other depth players who have been through here in recent years. I think he’s a perfect 4th line guy on a true contender at this stage in his career. I’m not sure he’ll be playing the 4th line or for a true contender, but that’s the role I think he has the highest ceiling for.

He fit the mold of a defense first forward which the Penguins have been infatuated with lately

Eller was one of the most obvious candidates to move given his age, contract status, and ability to still provide NHL caliber minutes at the center position. I’m fairly certain the team had been shopping him for a while so I’m not surprised by this at all. The only thing a find a little odd is the year on the third round draft pick being in 2027. Seems like there could have been another deal out there for a 2025 or 2026 pick. Perhaps there would have been if the Penguins weren’t flamboyantly imploding in real time and somewhat forcing Dubas to do something, anything, to deflect the ire from the fandom.

With every veteran traded away it should afford an opportunity for somebody else to step up. This might be sink or swim time for someone like Sam Poulin. There’s a spot there for the taking. If he’s up to the task it could certainly be his. It very well could be his last go of it in Pittsburgh depending on how things play out.

Who will be next?
