The Canucks traded Vasily Podkolzin.

That’s it, that’s all the news. But to expand:

The former 10th overall pick in 2019 was running out of room to make a dent in the Canucks’ lineup. While some of the fanbase held onto Podkolzin’s potential, others saw a middling bottom 6 player who wasn’t putting up great numbers in the AHL let alone the NHL. Podkolzin had a rocky development after being drafted, and never seemed to find his footing or confidence in North America. Honestly, a change of scenery is a positive for him, especially as the Canucks signed Jake DeBrusk, Kiefer Sherwood, Danton Heinen and Daniel Sprong to their forward ranks this summer. It seemed like Podz was on the outside looking in to start camp.

Overall, the return of a 4th round pick is underwhelming, but that apparently was the price for someone who could get lost on waivers to start the season. It’s better for the Canucks to snag that pick then see Podkolzin leave for nothing. Chalk another one up under the Benning “L” column.

The Canucks currently sit at 48 of 50 contract slots used up. They’ll probably make another kind of low-end trade like this to open up flexibility during the season.

Back to summer, but note that training camp opens in one month today!

And with that we’re back on the top of the page. Comment away:
