Luckily we wont be relying on him to be our starter next year like we did with Vitek. Fine for a backup i guess, atleast it was 50% retained.

Devils are trading Colin Miller to the Jets for a mid-round pick.

Fast reaction to the trades:

-Didnt get enough for Toffoli, extremely disappointing. Got assets to use as ammo in future trades this offseason but i would've rather kept him and tried to re-sign him. We'll see what happens with these picks.

-Dont mind the Allen trade. He has been connected to the Devils for years so not shocked it finally happened. Glad the Habs ate half. Hes a fine backup, much more reliable than the kids imo, and he'll allow us to keep Schmid/Daws in Utica next season to continue developing. Very interested to see who the starter will be(probably Markstrom, but there will be multiple options available this summer). Very much ready to have a Markstrom/Allen tandem next year, rightly or wrongly.

-Whatever on the Miller trade. Gave up a 5th for him, got back a 4th. Wouldn't have hated re-signing him though.

Another trade. The Devils have traded Vitek Vanecek and a 7th to the Sharks for Kaapo Kahkonen. No salary retention involved.

Some key notes from Fitz' presser:

-Didnt get far at all with a Toffoli extension. He knew a few weeks ago that we weren't re-signing him because they didnt even get past term. He wanted too much term and we were never going to do that. Says the door is open for a return in the summer in free agency.

-On the Toffoli return, "thats what the market was."

-Tried to get Jake Allen earlier this year but we were on his NTC, so it didnt get far back then. He finally decided to waive now and will be part of the tandem next season.

-The trade with the Sharks wasnt about Kahkonen at all, it was all about getting out of Viteks contract and opening up that flexibility.

-Will be "big game hunting" in the goalie market this summer trying to get a #1, "trying to get something that we havent had here before."

-Said that teams were trying to "extort" him in a goalie trade leading up to the deadline.

-Hes aware of the lack of physicality on the team, in particular up front among the forwards. Said he wants forwards that finish checks.

So we currently have 4 goalies on the roster, must be sending Dawes and Schmid down

I saw that Fitz is still planning to get a #1 in the off-season which was boosted with the vanacek trade

A little surprised that in that trade vanacek wouldn't go back even as a back up goalie but at least now we have some flexibility

Have a feeling that means mercer and/or holtz will be in play for a true #1 goalie and maybe even top 10 pick

Just hope they don't overpay or markstrom

Don't worry we will do 1 of 2 things with the pick

1) will be a big reach for a player that could have been drafted in the 2nd round

Or

2) will trade it for an over the hill goalie that will retire shortly after the trade

Only next season. According to capfriendly the pick will upgrade to a 2nd if Allen plays in 40 or more games in 2024-25 AND if Allen is a member of a club that qualifies for the playoffs(so if we make the playoffs or trade him to a team that makes the playoffs)
