Unless Johnny Hockey was lying when he said the Islanders did not contact him. Why would he lie? Islanders can use another Stevie Y type. They need a GM that understands today’s speed and skill NHL and someone that can share a vision and relate to players.

I think Lou is big on secrecy. I think it’s prob just professionalism on Johnny hockey for adhering to Lou’s button lip. I just don’t believe the GM of a team who offered Tavares max money and term, Panarin, and whoever else I’m forgetting top dollars to add offense, somehow didn’t try and lure the top offensive UFA in Gudreau.

The problem is a lot of this roster is the same roster that was under Jack Capuano.

Also, sure you can argue that. I’ll reiterate the example I bought up earlier. Are you saying the fourth line would be just as effective under whoever our next coach is as under Trotz? Trotz leaned on that line arguably more then any other in important situations. I would say there’s less then a zero % chance it would be and therein lies at least part of the problem.

My point exactly. Similar roster with similar results under two inexperienced coaches versus an experienced coach who made lemons into lemonade.

I’m not saying anything about the 4th line. I’m only saying that within a ten year span, this team had similar issues holding a lead, except in the middle of the tenure under an experienced Trotz, this team over performed. If it was just one year I’d call it a fluke. Multiple ECF with very similar rosters points to a coaching problem.

My thoughts are this the islanders defense has been horrendous. Mayfield has looked bad the turnovers are ridiculous in their own zone. Then every game at least three or four times they are stuck in their zone for two minutes straight. This simply can not happen and giving up close to 40 shots a game can’t happen. The Islanders are older and slower and shows every year. It gets worse and worse. The same team ever year is not working. There a few guys I would love to see leave and move on.

Lee is one guy. He has lost a step and hasn’t been the same since his injury. Pageau I think all the trade rumors through the summer got to him and he is just different. Palms is another guy who every year is just exhausting to watch. I think a soft rebuild is in order.

Also sorry but we need a new coach. Lane Lambert is definitely not the guy. We need a hard nose defensive minded coach. The islanders are built for that style but yet are playing a different style

It’s hard to argue these points. It’s very difficult when it’s pretty much the same roster every year and especially when other teams are constantly looking to improve.

I’m not impressed with Lane this year, but he is also in a very tough spot.

All I know is the Islanders constantly miss on top UFA's for whatever reason and it's something they need to address. Unless they are going to hit it out of the park with the draft and with trades, they must do better with FA's. They cannot sign the top guy all the time, but they need to at least once. Just signing bottom basements FA's is not going to cut it.

Well yeah sure I don’t think anyone is debating whether this team would be more successful under a more defense oriented structure. I think the debate is how much more successful? I don’t think this team is the same team that went to the ECF’s for multiple reasons including age. That ship has sailed imo.

Yeah I think we’re on the same page. I also think the blue line got younger with less experience. There’s no Johnny Boychuk to eat big end of game minutes and make safe plays. Too many mistakes and lack of structure back there.

Wonder if Corey Perry is available 👀

My point of bringing up the 4th line is depicting that these just aren’t the same players. A lot of them are in the twilight of their careers. Up to this point we’ve been unable to replace/replicate their defensive/offensive production(save for Nelson). Trotz came up short his last season here. Sure the team was ravaged by Covid(like a lot of other teams) but I don’t think that was THE reason. My point is sure fire the coach but the real problems remain. The lineup is mediocre.

It’s been mediocre for decades. Seriously, when was the last time this team had a legitimate NHL first line. Save for the 2 months of Tavares/Vanek/Moulson, they’ve perennially put out 1B first lines.

Perhaps they are more mediocre now?

I'm blaming players. No coach has ever told defensemen to do some of the braindead things these guys continue to do. Maybe Mayfield is still injured? I kind of hope so because if this is the best we can expect from him for the next 6 plus years, .
Also tonight I almost want to see them go down 2 or 3 goals early. Lets see if they have any fight in them or if they just pack it in.

It's all sports, certain games are "exclusive" aka buy that service and the league gets a kickback

Lane may not be the best coach, but I doubt he is telling the players forget defense and just focus on offense. I know you cannot fire all the players, but they do need to take some responsibility as well.

So let's see . They have a lead in a game where they have been outplayed. What will they do in the 3rd???

If past is prologue, then they will give up 3 goals and lose in regulation.

It’s an inevitability at this point.
