It was a good bounce back game. Third line was the hot hand tonight.

Nice to have a mostly stress free game and great bounce back from getting their asses kicked. Gotta go into Pittsburgh on NYE and return the favor. Always love seeing JGP have a big game.

Gauthier 4g 4a 8pts in 16 games, playing just under 10 mins/game. Great pick up by Lou.

I have to say I wasn't all that thrilled about staying relatively quiet in offseason, but it appears to have been the right thing to do. Also, the additions of Reilly and Bortuzzo on the fly have been very effective. Hopefully Varly travels with the team on the upcoming road trip, otherwise we might be in need of adding another goalie.

Agree about Gauthier. Compare his 8 points and +1 in 16 games to Wahlstrom's 5 points and -8 in 19 games. Gonna be hard for Wally to get back in the line up, short of an injury.

I don't think there's much chance Lou adds another goalie. Sorokin can carry a heavy load if need be. We've seen him play back-to-back games in past seasons.

You're probably right. The best scenario would be for Varly to be back soon...and for Sorokin to stay healthy!!

Just watched the game. Good bounce back after the nightmare against the Pens.
Gauthier came in and made a positive statement vs Wally’s opportunities to do the same. Wally is a one dimensional player and that just doesn’t get you ice time in the NHL.
Tough bounce on the Caps goal for sure.
A shut out would have been a nice cherry on the top for the teams effort and putting the last game behind them.
Gotta think the Isles come out with a bit of a snarl against the Pens next game and get the W in Pittsburgh.

Was excited about Gauthier when we picked him up due to his size and speed. Happy to see he seems to be putting it together. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Gaultier Career Stat Line - Age 26
GP:169 G: 18 A: 22 Pts: 40 +/-: -19

Wahlstrom Career Stat Line - Age 23
GP:180 G: 34 A: 32 Pts: 66 +/-: -9

There's a reason Gaultier was available for Lou to sign in July.
He's not exactly a pillar of consistency. Not disagreeing that Wally ins't earning a spot on the roster but he is young and has just recovered from a pretty major injury.

Numbers don't lie and Wally has done a good bit more in almost the same # of games. Also, Wally's not afraid to throw his body around. I haven't seen Gaultier put a check on anyone this season and in many games he floats around the ice nearly invisible.

We had a drafted forward a while back that the Coach/GM wasn't too high upon and traded him away to Vancouver. Anyone remember a guy named Bertuzzi?

First off Wally’s no Bertuzzi.
This is Wally’s second coach and both have him penciled in the same spot most nights. The press box.
Kid needs to learn how to play away from the puck and make the smart simple plays. You can’t coach stupid and I think that might be Wally’s biggest problem. If that’s the case you can be Uber talented but you still wont play. Ask Josh Ho Sang.
Wally is young as you said, may just put it all together which I hope he does.
Thing is you can look at stats all you want but if you go out and play a good game you get to play again. For me Gauthier gets it and Wally doesn’t. He’s earned the ice on that 3rd line vs Wally. For me it’s not even a question.

Not saying he’s a top six player, but he seems to have found his game playing in Lane’s system. If he can continue at a similar pace that he’s on, he’ll certainly continue to find ice time.

Also not saying Wally won’t amount to anything, and agree the injury he sustained takes a while to recovery from, mostly mentally I would think. I hope he finds that game we’ve all been waiting to see.

I want Wahlstrom to work for so many reasons, the least not being that he was a high 1st round draft pick and that he seems like a good dude.

Comparing the two is apples and oranges. Even though Gauthier is a former 1st round pick too, he’s played 3rd and, mostly, 4th line minutes most of his career. Wahlstrom has played top-6 minutes, 1st unit PP minutes and, without looking at stats, I’m sure more minutes a game.

Unlike Bertuzzi, Wahlstrom has already had a major injury and doesn’t work the corners the way he should. That’s the problem. Someone already said it (7?), Gauthier just seems to understand what’s necessary to win. Wahlstrom isn’t a slacker or anything but he can’t skate like Gauthier.

It sucks because he’s a homegrown player, he has that shot and he can fight when called upon. But, if things don’t change, he’s a goner.

I think the bottom line is he’s not the brightest bulb in the fixture. Gotta be able to be coached and do what your asked to do when you get the ice time. Which he doesn’t do.
Just my opinion.

I'm so happy for you that it's not a question. You must be the smartest hockey player to have never made it to the show or the most brilliant unemployed Coach or GM in north america.

By the numbers, Wahlstrom is the better player and has more upside than a 26 yr old with less games played, who's been traded twice and signed at league minimum in free agency. I'm hoping Parise decides he wants to play over either of them at this point.

Bottom line: It would be premature to crown one, condemn the other and risk the mistake of letting talent walk/traded for little return.

THIS JUST IN...... Scott Mayfield activated.......all our problems are solved.

You're right. Wally is NO Bertuzzi. He is much more responsible defensively than TB was at the same age.
