Idk, would you like to revisit this each January for the next 7 years ?

Nobody argued Hellebuyck as an elite goalie right now.

The issue was always term.

- Swedish_Jesus

Only if we can look back at the past 13 years as well. Specifically the last 4.

Winnipeg was the only team giving him that contract, that’s why he is still there.
- Swedish_Jesus

Yeah, sounded like he had a foot out the door until that $59M plopped onto his lap.

Would rather have that contract over Powers.

You think 34 is old for a goalie? How old was Anderson here?
- sabresfan69

Too old.

Quinn=Olofsson except Olofsson has scored 30 and 20 several times in his career.
No hands. No forecheck, slow skater

Should Owen Power be capable of creating offensive chances or is that too much to ask?
- sabresfan69

I’ve been very critical of Power this season… the more I watch him, the more warranted the criticism is. I’ll get ridiculed for my stance, but it’s usually from the delusional Sabres fans. His unwillingness to engage physically is beyond concerning and his newly signed 8 year contract will not age well

Meh, Power should get better and Helly should get worse. Can see it either way. Really wish they'd have bridged him though, Tage's contract made them think signing guys early was a good forever strategy...it isn't.

I agree. It’s more than a sophomore slump. He might have the worst shot from the point in the league: a limo, inaccurate wrist shot. He is a B- on defense, pretty good hockey IQ. Decent skater. If the offense does not get figured out, he is a bust

"should"

Agreed on the bridge, it's in their favor to do that sine they suck, minimizes leverage for arbitration.

I hate the idea of taking that to the logical extreme: goalies are a bit random, so don't bother trying.

KA has made no effort. It's not worth the effort isn't a good defense.

- Lunaion

I don't think it is so much he hasn't tried, rather that he is unable to consumate a deal...for whatever reason, not willing to pay the cost which were likely inflated given having zero experience and being taken advantage of.
And that is far more damning.

He plays like the stoner in AA who is just there to make his dad happy.

The odd part with Power is that they didn't need to make a decision this early. KA definitely got overexcited about this group.

Yes. If the offensive upside is not there, he could have been signed to a bridge or for midrange money

It's also not like they are the only team signing young players to big long term extensions early.

Yeah, just a should. Helly may age like fine wine, while Power ages like milk, but time will tell. If I'm a betting man I'd say the "best value" flips in two years but CH's ability to stay healthy does give some hope for Jets fans.

I think we all did, but the fact he could've kicked the can down the road once without much consequence is the painful thing. That coupled with the fact the price was still high.

I was super wrong about him, I thought he was untouchable....it just shows how bad the teams were from 20-22.
