Obviously we hoped he did even better, but I'm not dismayed by his play either. Our defense is porous, we have very little structure and let up a lot of point blank chances at random. Any goalie will struggle in this scenario.

It still doesn't change the fact that starting 35-37 games is a good load and not some wasted year.

Personally, my biggest leap in talent came from when I was wrapping up my junior year of high school hockey and started to play junior A. At first, I was behind two guys, so I only got to practice with them. Within a month I was significantly better without ever seeing a lick of game time. There's a reason why guys like John Elkin, Bob Essensa, Mitch Korn and Ian Clarke all made a killing setting up goalie camps over the summer...where not one game is ever played. We can get better without game time scenarios.

I think that value is acceptable based on his contract. They get a controllable defensive asset in return, one who can be used in their top 4, and a decent prospect and a pick. They want to be good just as soon as we do. A (protected) first round pick from Buffalo doesn't get them there.

Considering how explosive Buffalo’s offense was last season, it’s wild that this spot doesn’t have any of their top scorers from 2022-23. No Tage, no Dahlin, no Skinner, no Tuch, no Cozens.

Instead, the honor goes to Buffalo’s often-forgotten top-10 pick, Casey Mittelstadt. His selection was a little controversial at the time (Casey MiddlingStats anyone?) but over the last two years, he’s more than lived up to his draft billing. This year, he leads the Sabres with 38 points in 44 games, a career-high pace as he enters his prime years. To go with that production he’s been the team’s most consistent forward at creating offense at five-on-five and limiting chances the other way.

It’s not great that the team’s top dogs have struggled, but it is great that Mittelstadt has become a serious weapon for them this season and beyond.
