Vancouver has 7 picks for the upcoming draft. Those picks burn holes in any Van GM's pocket.

Toss you Kuzmenko for a first and a second.

At least when Chicago is paying Bedard 10M a year, there will be lots of ELC contracts.

lol the Cawks will never get a mix of players like you had before for those cups. Full matks for them but you will never see the Likes of Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook and a few core others on that club again. Hope you enjoyed what you 'had' there lil champ.

So you won't be in the PO's for another 5 years.

Perfect.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. If they get the first overall pick again. NHL made the rules very good for Chicago to get Bedard and Celebrini. There's your Kane and Toews. Nolan Allen or Ethan Del Mastro could turn into Seabrook. Korchinski and Rinzel big pucking moving D.

I don't think they make players like Hossa anymore.

I wonder if he was just an acquisition to get through Soucy being injured and the price was right. Near the TDL if D is healthy, Zadorov's cap hit is much less and teams have accumulated more space.

Vancouver paid a 3rd and a 5th for him. Could look to sell for a higher price.

- manvanfan

That didn’t take long. Hopefully you get 1 playoffs out of him.

Meh. It's the Vancouver media. What do you expect. Tons of chatter, the vast majority of it actually worthless

Edit: This is from Drance, so take it as part of the Vancouver media landscape, his article on trade tiers. Has Z in the "Not moving... unless there's a blockbuster" category.

Nikita Zadorov (UFA this summer, $3.75 million cap hit)

Although his role in the lineup was cut into a bit the week before the All-Star break following a blown assignment on a 3-1 goal in Vancouver’s overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues, on balance, Zadorov has been excellent for the Canucks since he was acquired from the Calgary Flames in early December.

The hulking, left-handed blueliner has brought a needed physical edge to the Vancouver lineup, performed solidly as a defensive piece and added a sneaky puck-moving element from the back end that has given Vancouver’s breakout some additional push. He’s a really good player and will give the team a size advantage in just about every presumptive playoff matchup they could encounter. You’d expect the Canucks to be very reluctant to mess with that.

But this section is all about options they could consider if they were required to push a massive blockbuster over the line. In considering Zadorov, then, it’s worth noting that when all of Quinn Hughes, Carson Soucy and Ian Cole are healthy, the Canucks have something of a surplus of left-handed defenders — and head coach Rick Tocchet has strongly indicated his preference for playing defensemen on their strong side.

Additionally, Zadorov is a pending unrestricted free agent, and given their myriad of offseason priorities — beginning with Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek — they may not be able to afford to retain Zadorov beyond this upcoming playoff run. Could that be a consideration for Canucks management if the option to add a right-handed blue-line upgrade presents itself before March 8?

It’s worth noting that it wouldn’t be entirely unheard of for a Rutherford-led team to acquire and also trade the same player in the same season. In the fall of 2018, Rutherford’s Pittsburgh Penguins acquired former Canucks forward Tanner Pearson before sending him to Vancouver just a few months later for Erik Gudbranson. It’s perhaps instructive to note as well that Gudbranson was then dealt again by the Penguins just eight months later.

Trade em all, fuck it, window is open…it’s time to go all in!! Look at the Flames, just two short seasons ago they had a young promising team that had 50 wins 111 points, then it all went for shit. Gaudreau became a UFA, Tkachuk wanted out, now no one wants to play there and they’re in shambles.

Windows open and close quickly in todays NHL, go for it when the opportunity presents itself.

You call a D that plays 17 minutes a game, has 4 points in 24 games a "nice thing" because he throws a few hits once in a while?

The guy is basically Ian Cole, Carson Soucy but throws one extra hit per 60 minutes of game time.

He's a 3M defender that wants 4.5 or more.

I like how Tampa has navigated this. Overpay for cost-controlled players. Sure they pay a premium, but they're not constantly juggling contracts or paying for rentals every year.

Terrible suggestion. There will always be windows if your prospect pool is full, your cap is manageable, and you have a solid franchise leadership structure in place.

If the Canucks did as mentioned have a different kind of trade in mind. Selling higher on Zadorov to use those assets to acquire a top 6 forward. Not necessarily a top 6 forward but Tanner Jeannot has not had a very good season in TB. Maybe TB would trade Jeannot for Zadorov. Makes Kuzmenko expendable and that trade clears up space for a deal for Tanev.

I was not talking about the player specifically. I was commenting on the fact that everything finally seems to going our way but yet there’s always this “something is not right” angle coming out of local media. It’s frustrating as a fan who just wants to enjoy the season and ponder about playoff success.

I think the difference there is Tampa drafted Stamkos, Hedman, Kucherov, Vasilevskiy and Point all within six years of each other and they just kept building around them. The Canucks don’t really have a cost controlled core like that.

Miller is already 31 years old next year, his play might drop off significantly within a few years, EP40 and Hronek are RFA’s next year, a huge unknown. I think they had more stability, a lot of what ifs with the Canucks.

I was being facetious when I said trade them all, but I’d definitely trade first round pick to try and go for this year.

I agree with that but the Canucks don’t have two key guys in Pettersson and Hronek signed, if they were, you could dial it back. As I just wrote, I was being facetious when I said trade them all but I’d definitely trade the first to go for it this year. Just hope you can sign a lot of your RFA’s and UFA’s signed.

I would probably keep him because Soucy has been hit by the injury bug a bit this year. Good insurance to have. The idea that he wants 4M plus per year is bonkers to me when they are paying Soucy 3.2 and Cole 3M. It's not great to have 3.75M in cap space being sitting in the press box come playoff time with a top 6 that could use a bit of an upgrade.

I'm glad I don't have to do anything because it could go good or could go bad if the Canucks do do something.

I think I would add Oskar Sundqvist from Stl for Aatu Raty and that's it.

Maybe I’m overvaluing aggression from a d-man because it’s been so long since this team has had any truculence. I thought it was a good trade for something needed and it would be great for it to work out.

With all the RFA and UFA's on their books coming into next season the Canucks definitely have to try and keep an eye on the future, but they can't pass up on the opportunity to go for it this year.

UFA's - Blueger, Lafferty, Joshua, Myers, Zadorov & Cole
RFA's - Pettersson & Hronek

That's basically the nuts and bolts of the team not signed for next year, save Demko, Hughes, Boeser & Miller. The organization needs to make moves with this years Cup in mind first and foremost IMO, but if they can accomplish both, young cost controlled player, then I'm sure they'd be all over that.

I hope they don't trade him. When the playoffs get physical he'll show his worth more. He talks about that a lot too, so it's not like something he doesn't know or shy away from.

I think they need more of an offensive type centerman if they're going to acquire someone. I'd see if Ottawa would trade Josh Norris and retain some of his salary, they need a shakeup and he's a young offensive type center under long term contract. Maybe add in Tarasenko too, he can play wing.
