Lou got to run 3 teams and won 3 Cups. Lou gave a lot to the NHL and got back a lot. It's time for Lou to do the right thing and retire.

Having a little knowledge of real estate, i wouldnt be surprised to see the isles ownership flip the team and make money from the UBS build.

At some point I wouldn't be surprised. I can't remember what podcast I was listening to earlier this week, but they were talking about how Mark Cuban thinks that TV rights deals have peaked, in terms of profitability, for teams and that buying teams to invest in the real estate might be the new deal driver for owners.

I don't think that they're going to be doing that anytime soon, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see it happen at some point. They're still building out the retail village in the old South Lot and that's Malkin's bread and butter. I would expect that they stick around for a little while before they decide to sell, they're gonna have to let that property appreciate for awhile before they can dump it for any sort of significant profit.

I don't even know who the big names out there are at this point, aside from the tired old retreads that somehow keep getting jobs despite being terrible at it. Some interesting names will probably pop up in CBJ's search so that will be interesting to see.

Yeah i would agree with Mark Cuban, with the age of social media platforms, cable and cable rights are becoming obsolete. The NFL tested the waters with a playoff game on a paid app this past year. The days of cable are numbered

I agree, i wouldnt be surprised either to see them sell, even if its in a year or two when the retail is finished. They won the right to build in 2017, and since then the value of long island real estate has grown exponentially with covid etc. Those guys are going to make a lot of money for that belmont project. Its never about the team winning, but always about the bottom line. If you can model after Mark Cuban and buy for 500 mill and sell for 3.5 bill thats the name of the game. Winning championship is for ego for those owners.

Edit : see Charles Wang, and his move to brooklyn which made him a fortune after he wasnt able to do what Malkin is doing (albeit smaller retail project)

They could certianly turn a nice profit. They bought 85% for $485M and the remaining 15% in 2021. The 10% stake they just sold was at a $1.75M valuation so that's about 3.5x what they paid intially. In a few years it could be $2BN.

We can all agree that Lou brought respectability back to a franchise that was almost on its last leg. He has tried to bring legitimacy and loyalty back as well. However, the contracts that he has hooked his wagons too have not produced as one would hope.

This is probably Lou's biggest Achilles heel with this team. Some say that Lambert should never have been hired. However, if remember when his time was coming, he was sort after by other teams. He was the best option for the team at the time. I would have made a move at Thanksgiving, but that is me. Who knows if the Roy talks were even in progress, then.

I look at Roy as a positive towards the future of this team. I love the energy and insight that he brings to the organization. I would like to see what kind of input he has at the draft and the impact of presence at free agency.

This team as constructed should stay the course. If it is borderline about the playoffs, sell. Try and gain draft picks and prospects. See what you can open up for free agency.

This not a stanley cup team. The have the potential to make noise if in but is not a threat by any stretch.

Let Roy evaluate so that he can provide Lou with recommendations.

I think you meant 1.75 billion valuation, but yeah i agree. Its never about winning for these owners. Charles Wang used the isles 20 mill loss' as a right off for his CA earnings im sure. After using that benefit for 10-12 years, and being that he was turned down for the lighthouse project, he moved the isles to brooklyn which pumped the value big time. Fans all thought he kept the team in new york but it was all about raising his value (which any of us would do)

The real value in commercial real estate isn’t necessarily the property. It’s when the building is built and stabilized. Meaning generating income on an almost daily basis. The value is in the lease with the islanders and the ability to attract concerts and shows. Charles wanted to build the arena, stores, and hotels to stabilize, then someday flip for a fortune.

100% which is why i think these guys are going to build the retail, get all the leases locked up for 10 years or more, and then flip it. They'll make 4x what they paid in less than 10 years. Crazy money

No doubt. I’m not sure who owns what between the islanders, the arena and the development rights. There is Malkin/Ledecky, Oak View, Sterling and maybe one or two others. Plus minority investors. It’s a little confusing.

Yeah I dunno either, but what is public knowledge is these guys bought this team for 485 million, and just sold 10% @ a 1.75 billion valuation, which made them back 175 million (36% of their original purchase price.) You dont get that wealthy being stupid i guess

As far as I'm aware, the ownership group is Malkin, Ledecky, John Collins, and this new guy that now owns 10%. Assuming Collins also owns 10%. Not sure of what the valuation was when Collins bought in last year but I'm sure it's in the neighborhood of the current valuation. I believe Oak View gets a small portion of the arena revenue, but no team ownership.

Toronto sucks. Up 3-1 late. Give up a goal. Immediately take an o-zone penalty and give up another. No help

Ledecky and Malkin have ownership in a lot of commercial real estate including Europe.
Their legacy is the reestablishment of the franchise and arena.
I don't think they want to sell and keep this out of their family plus they love being sports owners. I'm sure Katie Ledecky has a future as an executive to the franchise.

Roy talking about compete level is a problem the isles have had for years. I’d rather see the isles finish the season with bport guys who will compete, than a roster players who’s lazy and gets in the lineup no matter what. Whoever it is, if you’re caught watchin the play, they should be benched.
Under Trotz the forecheck was a major difference than prior years. It’s the reason for their success. They were relentless. “Those pesky isles”. It all starts with the forecheck and being hard on that puck. That creates turnovers which turn into scoring chances. They’ve since regressed and are now the team coughing up the puck.

The players have gotten older and slower now. Even outside of the ECF trips, Barry had his challenges with this team and slow starts in games. When you players like the Islanders with long term deals, it makes things very difficult, and Lou likes his vets.

I think it comes down to laziness personally. They needed a coach like Roy to skate them at practices. So strange to me that Lou has 7,468 rules for his players, but brought in a soft coach like Lambert. No player at any level should be above skating hard at practice and working.

Hope to be wrong due to us being stuck with them but I think it has more to do with this lineup being stale more then laziness. Of course laziness is a component of it but it’s more a symptom of the lineup being stale imo.

While Lou's history is evident with the Devils and the Leafs. And yes, there probably should have been a little retool. The owners are only a few year into a new build.

The opinion is probably a veteran laden team would be the better option. just saying.
