Bruce... with under 30games to go, he probably has 1.3m left on his deal. Not 3.15

Exactly, and the leafs have used all of their space all damn year. Which means they only have about $30 mill available to spend for the rest of it. Including their current players. It’s not just the players cost that goes downwards.

I wonder if Edmonton would do a Broberg for Robertson trade - dmnted
This is one worth considering. The one question I would have is why an 8th overall pick has not cracked that particular lineup in the four years since he was drafted.

If your not good enough to make the oilers 3rd pairing defence, you may not be NHL quality

It's my concern as well. As Dozzer has pointed out, Roberston is not really more than a third liner on the Leafs with scoring touch but is weak defensively. Broberg is a 22 year old, 6'4" dman with some upside.

This. McMann has proven he’s worth keeping and he’s their best third liner currently. And once Jarnkrokn is back he’ll be taking Robertson’s wing making Robertson, at best, a 4th liner. The leafs can sign a a guy for the same bloody price in the off-season who is a proper 4th liner because Robertson is not. Keeping him at this point just seems foolish unless Marner or Nylander get hurt bad enough to end their season.

My gut feeling is the leafs trade their first rounder ONLY for a legit 3rd line C, or a top 4 D with at least average offensive upside....
Roy for either later picks, or prospects and/or a roster player

Offensive upside? Why? It’s what they don’t need. They need a defensive upgrade back there.
That being said maybe they should just tell Rielly that since he’s the $7.5 mill all star he can play the (frank)ing right side because Brodie has looked much better on the left meaning his days as a either side D man might be done.
He has been at the top of the league the last few years defensively.
And do the Leafs need a top 4 right hand D that is good defensively? you tell me.
And yeah it is a rumour site, I will continue to talk about rumours. If you don't like it fake then simply don't (frank)ing read or reply. It isn't hard. - Santo_44
I finally found myself on your side Santo.
It's exactly these types of players Leafs should be looking at...under the radar that don't usually get mentioned in the normal rumor mill.
I look at the UFAs and the names the get thrown around and can't really find any type of D trade that the Leafs could do.
This however, seems like the right kinda player, from a different conference, on a team the Leafs have traded with in the past, good age, good stats.....a lot of boxes seem to check.
And since the trades that happen usually come out of left field and never the ones we repeatedly here, you might be on to something.

You want defenceman that can pass the puck effectively in the top 4.... its why I put him as a number 5, he excels at everything else....
Last thing you want is a dman playing 20 minutes a night, and you're saying "oh f**k" everytime he has the puck... think McCabe in the playoffs last year, when he started to try to do too much.

This.
If Roy is a better Beniot, then I'm in.
Use Robertson + for Roy.
Dump Brodie for Cap relief.
Use the 1st and Minten a few other assets for Jenner...CBJ is flush with young C's....and another middle RHD like Peeke...then the Leafs are in business.

You put a guy like Roy with Rielly.
Rielly does the moving and Roy does the staying. Rielly worked great with Schenn for that exact reason. Rielly takes the puck and (frank)s off with it and Schenn stayed at home.
Rielly doesn't need a true #2, he needs a solid stay at home guy IMO.
Not so sure Columbus doesn't start unloading players. They are a tire fire. Calgary looked really bad yesterday and will continue unloading UFA's. Ditto for Sens who lost to the worst team in the league yesterday. - winsix

Simply due who his partner was. They’ve finally got a physical shut down pair so d men 3 and 4 are not necessary. That’s the shut down pairing. The top pair is the offensive one and the bottom pair is the half and half.
If anything replace Liljegren or Brodie with a more physical defensive guy but otherwise there will be no upgrade. A Brodie replacement can be a tad more offensive but the only reason to do that is to upgrade the top pairing right side. He looks better on the left notably.

Then figure out the goalie situation cuz something has to give between Woll, Jones, Murray and Sammy. - underhill14
Keep in mind Benoit is a left side guy and only works with McCabe because he can play the right side as well as the left.
Brodie has a M-NTC and is a free agent at the end of the year. He’ll cost picks/prospects for someone to take him on.
And without space opened up no deal with the non playoff sellers unless you dump salary as well by overpaying with the very little picks/prospects that they have.

Agree with this, a bit of offensive talent isn’t bad but primarily a defensive guy is who they need with Rielly

Hard to calculate the exact TDL cap space available at the moment. It changes daily. Cap Friendly currently shows $1.3M for the Leafs. Agree that a strong stay at home physical d-man would help. If Treliving could make such a move, it will likely come from a non playoff team. Leafs are looking at trading futures (picks and or prospects) a playoff contender will be looking for help now.

I can agree with this... this isn't a terrible take.
