Really?
I’m not sure Gretzky could still play. - Arctic_AARDVARK
lol maybe if he changed positions, I mean he’s probably still more useful than Bertuzzi has been playing a wing, til the playoffs anyways, right everyone? Right?!? |

I think Marner is the better player over Nylander and I think any other team would pick Marner all day. But I like Willy too. - shack67
There's no doubt in my mind that this is exactly what the rational masses also think. Both great players.

I would agree Marner is better - but it’s by a very small margin. Especially looking at 5v5 impact, both wingers, offence first players, primary points. I think a team would maybe be tempted to get Willy if they have set guys and are more looking for goals. - Big23Questions
Nylander is .36 goals per game over his career.
Marner is .34
Considering how Marner always looks to pass to the best goal scorer on the planet, he’s still scoring at a very close pace to Nylander, and maintaining a higher shooting%. Willy has 16 more goals than mitch over their careers.
Willy loves shooting the puck. He’ll rip it before passing to a wide open Matthews lol. I don’t fault him for shooting all the time tho.
When it comes to playing defence, and structured hockey.. well,, Willy isn’t half the player Mitch is, unfortunately. |

I love both players.
I agree with what you have said but will expand a bit on it from my perspective.
I think the gap between them is virtually non-existent unless a team (or a person) was looking for a specific skill / thing & valuing that over another - which yes is common and often makes sense but not always and really depends on what else you have already.
What I mean is if you add up all the +'s and -'s (yes both players have both regardless of if people want to admit it or not) to me they are both about the same.
This is also why I don't think Marner's next contract should put him anywhere near Matthew's money and more on par with Willy - Marner got the overpay last contract so time to suck it up a bit and take a very very small haircut for the hometown team he says he loves to play for.
A team looking for an elite and pure goal scorer / deadly sniper who is also a very very good playmaker may value Willy more than Marner - especially if they already have a 'Marner' type player.
A team looking for an elite playmaker who is also a very very good scorer may value Marner over Willy, again especially if they already have a "Willy" type of player.
Marner is (arguably) a better PK'er than Willy but he also has had more opportunity to hone those skills as he has got far more PK time over his career in Toronto than Willy has. Might Willy one day be as good on the PK as Marner? Time will tell.
Willy is more of an offensive threat on the PK than Marner, that's just a fact that has been proven this year in the 3 SHG Willy has.
Both players have far more positives than negatives and as lucky as the Leafs are to have both they will suffer the cap impact of it until JT's contract comes off the books at 11M at least.

I was actually at the gym. We're going to Mexico next month and I'm no longer fit. I don't want to get mistakenly airlifted out to sea in a helicopter by a bunch of Mexican do-gooders, so I'm trying to lose a bit of weight in a month. It's ridiculous but it also makes my wife happy.

I've been on the 2 month work out for "Dad Bod" plan before our Mexico trip next month. I slipped from solid dad-bod to soft dad-bod the last couple of years. We almost got 'er back though ...so stay positive!

Sure if you are only talking regular season (so far) as Willy has outperformed Marner in pretty much every playoff series.
I really hope that changes and they both go wild and have amazing playoffs, Marner showed a lot of playoff improvement last season so I'm hoping that continues and this year they are both firing on all cylinders in a deep playoff run.

Bahia Principe Akumal (in the Mayan Riviera). About 10 years ago my wife and I started routinely working out and did it for about 3 years and I won't lie - I looked pretty decent for a formerly naturally skinny guy (although I think she looked vastly superior!) - but then I got hurt and then found excuses and more excuses to not start up again . . .
This is our first vacation down south since we were married in Cuba in 2004, so we're pretty amped. |

Don't rent a jet ski while you are down there. - Atomic Wedgie
My friend was married in Mexico and we stayed at the Riu Palace in the Mayan Rivieria in 2001 - I made that mistake then. Oh. My. God. My eyes were so red and swollen from the salt water - in just a couple of minutes! I was coming back to shore (very early from the half hour rental) looking through one squinted eye and they kept waving me back out, "You have more time!" - "I don't want more time!"
It. Sucked.

Here's get ripped quick plan, that works!
Intermittent fast from 6pm to 10am the next day. Eat nothing. Water is fine. (I even drink beer and it still works for me but better to go full fast obviously)
Then, start doing mountain climbers in 3 variations but continual without stopping.
20 x legs outside of arms wide, alternate left then right for a count of 20, in stride without stopping switch to
20 x legs straight up and back, like running with your hands on the ground, then switch in stride without stopping to
20 x legs to opposite elbow, left knee to right elbow, right knee to left elbow.
You're getting obliques, top and middle abs and lower/man line area.
Put on your favorite pump up song and try to rinse and repeat for the whole song. A normal length song will get you close to 400 total.
You do this for two weeks you will lose copious amounts of weight at the same time toning the whole upper body and you will see abs. Promise. If you really want to shred, do it twice a day: morning and night
Got get it fellas. Start now and you will all be ripped by summer, or not air lifted off a beach in two weeks. |

My measuring stick includes everything. Day 1 to today. I just think when you step back and consider the highs, the lows, the consistencies, the minutes played, and everything in between ....Marner has been the better player. And, from what I've seen, I believe he has another gear and will be the better player going forward.
They're both elite so we're debating the margins.
I actually thought Marner was the Leafs best player in the Tampa series last year. He was matched up defensively against the best and his 5v5 numbers were great. |

I did not know the goals per game was that close eh that’s crazy! Well done Marner.
As for structure - that’s why (and his anticipation skills off the chart) he is good defensively on the PK. He can play that game. But when the play rolls as it does 5v5 Marner gets lost and when he gets he puck in critical areas he turns it over a ton.
I guarantee nobody discourages Willy from shooting - not even 34. Willy can shoot and score and you want him to do that. I don’t at all see him as selfish with his shots to be honest.
I did see the primary assists between Willy and mitch is as close as the goals per game. It’s weird, I see the play as Willy is a much better goal scorers and Marner a better passer - and yet stats tell us they are very very close in both areas. Crazy.
Either way both real good players. I still think Marner just edges Willy out in that. Shame that Marner will be looking for a lot more money than Willy next contract though. Their pay should be separated by 500K - 700K per year in my opinion.

Good and fair/accurate points.
We are most definitely debating the slimmest of margins with the Willy v Marner debate and both are elite there is no debating that (well I guess some fan bases from other teams may but that's to be expected).

His only 3 goals ever on the pk were this year.
Marner has 1 goal this year and 9 overall in much more pk time....granted.
Career marner is .339 gpg and 1.10 ppg
Career willie is .359gpg and 0.87pgg
So i i wouldnt say "much more" offensive threat.
Willie is having a brake contract year no doubt...but we dont know if this a one off or not yet.
Marner has been more consistent over years but he has a pass first mentality while wilster has a shoot first mentality.
Marner was overpaid his 2nd contract, willie is overpaid on the this one.
Im hoping he takes no more than 12m on his next contract....which he will still he overpaid imo. |
