Partied too late celebrating Matthew's 50th goal?

I get it. I'd be pretty pumped too... I mean... our latest 50th goal scorer was Stéphane Richer.

He really has an incredible season.

Should be in the conversation for the Hart imho. Without him, I'm far from convinced Toronto is still in the playoffs picture.

Aaah, Richer. Another of the dozens of fading elites that joined the Lightning in their twilight years.

I remember being excited that we landed him, and then his stint in Tampa was injury-plagued and his scoring dried up. Like a lot of those guys who came to Tampa back then.

I see Nylander made up for this bone head crosscheck penalty at the end of the second period.

Good W for the Leafs as they snap a losing streak to the Yotes.

- dmnted

I have to be honest - it was called a trip, and it was a pretty weak call at that. McMann clears the zone on a nice diving play, the puck squirts to centre and Nylander follows out to pressure Durzi, Durzi turns and Nylander harries him with a side body stick tap, one Mississippi later and Durzi falls once he has safely made a lead pass - Nylander's stick may catch Durzi's back skate as it comes down, or Durzi may step on it - I just rewatched it a couple of times and can't honestly say it wasn't a dive - but I can honestly say from the perspective of what is and isn't a trip in the new NHL - it's in that wheelhouse of sometimes is and sometimes isn't.

Meh, someone would score about 30 of those goals in his place.
If he really wants to impress, dominate in the playoffs.

Dude. This isn't a meh!

There are literally only a handful of players in all of hockey history who consistently put themselves IN his place to score those goals and even fewer who have executed at this level on those opportunities.

In 2021-22 he had a span where he scored 51 in 50, it just wasn't from the start of the year - by that contrast, he's slacking!

Looking at some of the most recent top goal scoring seasons - when McDavid scored 64 last year, he never had a 50 game span with more than 43 goals. When Ovechkin scored 65 in 2007-08, he also never had a 50 game span with more than 43 goals. When Stamkos scored 60 in 2011-12, he never had a 50 game span with more than 42 goals.

This year, while only having played 5 50 game spans to measure from, Matthews' highest is 45.

Agreed. 51 goals in 54 games is the definition of greatness.

Any way you slice that up, Matthews is elite.

Matthews is having an MVP season. He could possibly sweep the Rocket, Hart, and Lindsay.

He has competition. I mean Kucherov, Mackinnon and McDavid are all having insane seasons as well.

But considering how goals are glorified (with good reason imho), I think he should be considered for sure.

Imagine if they didn't mess up and take one of the many great players available when they drafted him. They'd look pretty damn good right now.

He sounds like he's ready to bow out and sell (anything he can). Locking in Graves and Karlsson looks pretty ...

Unless he gets injured, I think it's a foregone conclusion that he gets 60. I think 65 is quite likely. 70+ would not be impossible. If his goal totals end up in that neighborhood, I think Duch or McJesus would have to put up 150+ points or more to take the Hart.

I'm genuinely excited for Matthews and the Leafs for this. It's rare to see this kind of scoring heater. I'm rooting for Duch to get the Hart, but I'm starting to think that Matthews is destined to sweep the awards this year. I wish I could have watched last night, but I did go back and watch Matthews' goals. 50 was typical Matthews. Routine. Made it look easy. No over the top reaction, because he knows 50 is just another step on the way to 75.

It's more that his points have started to catch his goals. He was leading the league in goals and was like 25th in points two months ago. Now he's 5th. That's almost the bigger factor in his Hart run, because aside from a little bit of PPG shenanigan's by Reinhart or Boeser's hot start, this race was already over a long time ago.
