3rd + 5th for retaining 25% - dmnted

I get the fact that Dumba plays for a poop team, but his numbers have been brutal. if you look at the way he is rated by the Athletic, -2 Offense and -5 Defense at $3.9M, he's not really worth anything, especially the gymnastics required to fit him under the cap. I would rather look at a player like Seeler on the Flyers. Big, really dirty, blocks shots, low cap hit and very responsible defensively. Only negative is he's a left shot.

Game one of the playoffs, you send out Grim Reaver to assassinate the opposing team's best player. They lose a key component and the Leafs lose, well, Reaves. It's early in the series, so if his major match penalty costs you the game, you have the rest of the series to make it up, which will be easier when the other team is missing their game-breaker. Repeat every series and plan the parade.

Rather than fight, I recently tried out All Three Zones, because I wanted to see what their data structure and analytical breakdown looks like. So credit here goes to them, but this is a side-by-side comparison of Nylander and Marner:
They are both fantastic offensively, with not surprisingly Marner having an edge in the passing metrics and Willy having an edge in the Shooting. You can see that Willy is really doing well at Zone Entries, and this year in particular, Marner is struggling - especially so for him.
Defensively they both have their issues. Marner is definitely more engaged (touches), but Willy's skating is probably giving him better numbers in retrievals and exits. The failed exit% discrepancy is probably more to do with Marner attempting long bomb passes more than Nylander.
As for the Forechecking, neither stands out, but it should be noted that surprisingly Willy is above average at applying forechecking pressure and recovering dump-ins. I will say that I'm not surprised that Marner is well below average at dump-ins - that has never been a part of his game. - Monkeypunk
Only in Franking Leafs Nation would having both these guys be a source of conflict amongst the fanbase. |

I just don’t think it’s wise to pay Nylander 11.5M
Maybe Thug Willy is a new thing, and he play like Tucker every night. |

If Covid didn't stall the Cap from increasing the past 4 years, I doubt anyone would be complaining. Even AA
I wouldn't even be complaining about the slow ass, bland, salteen cracker, casper of a Captain White bread Tavares.
just joking (frank)ers, but the Cap stall has made things judgey-er |

Personally like watching both players - fun and exciting talents.
But if the talk is salary and output:
I just used 8yrs to compare cause it seemed to fit? 8yrs is typically involved in contracts right so I figured just start there.
Player A earned $32M more than the Player B over the last 8 seasons (this one so far included).
Player A only tallied 85 primary points more than Player B over last 8 seasons combined.
I would look at that and say either Player A was grossly overpaid or Player B and player should have been paid a lot closer over the last 8 seasons (so underpaid in a sense) |

Imo 11.5m is too much for willie but what can you do now.
Marners 2nd contract was also too much for him at the time.
Hoping marner's next contract isnt over 12m |

We're always going to pay a premium for players here, while ironically, floating the league financially in a hard cap world. It's gotta be frustrating for any GM working here. |

Up until this season marner had 554pts willie had 430.
Actual average cash value for willies contract was 7.4 per but cap was 6.9. His cap hit in 2018 was 10.2m with actual cash being 12m. He got 27pts in 54 games. The following 3 years he remained under a ppg player. Only in years 5 and now 6 was he over a ppg.
A year after willie signed his deal, marner signed for 10.9 cap average but got 16m the first year and 15m the following.
He was a 1.13ppg player the first year of his contract. Years 2 - 4 he averaged 1.20ppg - 1.35ppg.
I initially thought willie was overpaid by $500 000 but thought the contract was fine the next 2 years and then he out performed his contract after that.
I initially thought marner was overpaid by a million per year, but thought he earned the cap the past two years. Still would have loved to have had him for 9.9m
I would have preferred wiilie at 10.5m per and prefer marner at 12 and under per his next contract. I have a bad feeling it will be higher.
But i like both players, however i still believe spending half your cap on 4 forwards is not the best course of action. With that said, in 2 seasons it shouldn't be as much of an issue once JT's contract comes up. |

players hire agents to deal with money, agents care about two things....maximizing terms and salary for their clients, it is the same every where. Some teams have it a bit easier with less taxes for players to pay and less media attention. |
