any of you own a sound bar for the tv?
worth it or not? what should I go for, or what should I avoid at all cost?
they have some at 100$ and others at 1200$.
I can also pass, I lived 50 years without one, I'm sure I can go another 20. lol

Don't have one, but everyone who does says the same: you get what you pay for.

I have a 200$ one, it was worth it for me because we have a first-gen flat TV upstairs and the sound is really terrible on those, specially the voices. But the new 4k TV we have in the basement doesn't need one I find.

I was going to get one a few years back with a new tv purchase, but for the room size I have, the default TV speakers are fine.

Older TVs and bigger rooms might need something else.

When I looked into it, there were lots of different types of sound bars, some that can also be integrated into a larger sound system, while others have integrated subwoffers.

I'd look at the size of the room you have and what you plan on using it for. If it is just generic "louder" audio, go lower end. If it is about more of a movie experience, then something more pricey would be the way to go - just not sure it gives you that much more of an experience though.

Can't help with soundbars as I use a 5.1 home theater system but this article might help you:

I would do research on the specific models you're interested in ... Dialogue Clarity is extremely important for a good experience.

A 5.1 system is more work in calibration for sure but the experience watching movies is worth it (to me at least).

But apparently, some soundbars can also bring a very pleasant experience without the fuss of a full home theater system.

Yeah, when I had a large condo in Toronto, I had that all set up and it was great.

But... I do not watch much TV anymore, movies even less, so the whole surround sound experience is meh to me.

Although, I did love it when I played console games that supported full surround sound. just do not have time for that anymore, either.

EDIT: I think there was a 5.1 release of dark side of the moon. Never heard it. But that would be cool.

That would be amazing, never heard it either ... on my Denon receiver there's the Dolby Surround mode that takes Stereo sources and upmixes them to 5.1 but it's obviously never as good as when recorded in 5.1 format on the source material itself.

Yeah, the whole thing would need to be remixed from scratch.

And for a lot of music, likely does not matter (I do not want to know who let the dogs out, let alone knowing in 5.1), but something like Dark Side of the Moon or Classical music, or some Vangelis / movie soundtracks might be really amazing to experience.

Pretty sure Pete tested the prototype, so you know this is a solid recommendation.

Agreed, most of the time I also prefer listening to music recorded in stereo in it's native stereo mode as Dolby Surround sometimes does weird things to the sound stage when upmixing.

Although the recent Dolby Surround modes have greatly improved over the years ... I remember my old Yamaha receiver would do strange things with upmixed stereo.

also heard about some decent things about Apple /Dolby Atmos, but I am too old to bother anymore.

Just give me my record player, 2 speakers and a comfy chair.

I'm good.

Yeah, I have a fairly large record collection I started in the 80s, now back filling a lot of stuff that was never really available before.

The advantage I have now is Spotify, you can really get a listen to an album and then buy the ones you really like... unlike the 80s, you'd just buy the album for one song and hope the rest did not suck.

That's all one really needs unless you're kinda like a "tech gizmo freak" like me.

Although my receiver does suppports Dolby Atmos, I've drawn the line at adding even more speakers to my room, my fully calibrated sound is already amazing as it is right now ... and the majority of movies (and Netflix I believe) only have 5.1 soundtracks anyway.

Atmos sounds gimicky to me ... it kinds of remind me of when companies were pushing 3D TVs on people in order to convince them to buy new TVs.

Also, I've ready that the Atmos implementation on Blu-ray disks is often poorly implemented (barely audible) or totally ignored by the movies studios because of the extra costs involved.

Yeah, not sure if people are still using it... I think it was apple trying to optimize their own products for streaming more than anything.
