Leafs had a great 1st period - one of their best. Vegas was on their heels and were just playing safe.
Second started alright then you get three individual mistakes ..bad ones ..that cost the team.
1st goal - Rielly missed his assignment. He took the blame, rightly. Brodie has strong side and is supposed to stay pressed. 44 has to know Barabanov leaked out.
2nd goal - Domi missed his assignment. Watch that build up ...he's clueless who to cover or that his guy has circled the net and is alone in front.
3rd goal - Yup Tavares turnover. Tough one on the wall but Sammy wants that one back.
4th goal - 88 too soft on the wall ...McCabe and Domi get behind in coverage and it's in the net.
After that it's over. - The Law
Agreed on this - funny I was yelling last night while watching (at Domi) he is horrific defensively but it's well documented here so I didn't bother posting it. You nailed it he looks so lost defensively, I'm not even sure that he is that lazy defensively (although all players are from time to time - looking at you 88 on that 4th goal) as not knowing what to do - the panel called it out big time. Take a look around and take a guy.
I did also notice yesterdy after that 1st period the wingers (and often the centre too) seemed to 'fly the zone' way early and the D were left with no real options and Vegas forecheckers to deal with. That's a recipe for disaster every time.
Sammy for sure wanted the 3rd goal back, any goalie wants one back when they get as much of the puck as he did but it ends up in the back of the net. You have that "I got enough of it I should have saved it" feeling and anger.
Oh well - it's one game after 7 good to great ones it happens.

I'll have to look for it again.
On the top of my head it was something like
Leafs Mantha(75% retained) Jensen(no retention), Kharia
WSH Robertson, Jarnkrok some other valued pieace
Minny 5th, project prospect for retaining 25% and Kharia
If this was possible I'd prefer retention on Jensen and keeping Jarnkrok.
Dangle Robertson and 2024 1st and add whatever for Jensen(1-2M retained) plus Mantha(75% retained) - Santo_44
Jarnkrok is a pretty useful player. they should keep him.

I agree, which is why I wanted it without him involved.
I mean...instead of retaining money on Jensen they could try and swap Kampf and Dowd in a deal |

C’mon Tre, get Kraken - Canada Cup
he's waiting for two things.
1- for the players cap hit to go down so they can fit under the Leafs cap
2- for the cost to be more reasonable.

Either go big or stay the course.
I'd try and add either Parayko or Markstrom and Tanev. I'm aware it will be costly but it's better than wasting assets on third liners like in the past. Parayko with his nice cap hit and term coupled with the fact that he's pretty much exactly what they need makes him an ideal add. Big, mean, right shot and not hopeless offensively. - hockey123
Parayko is to costly to acquire and to slow to keep up with the Leafs forwards.
Tanev is made of glass, he can't stay healthy and will cost to much to acquire |

He has missed only 2 more games than Matthews due to injury the last 3 seasons. |

Saw a trade on twitter where Leafs get Mantha double retained and Jensen
Mantha(1.6M) and Jensen 25% retained(3M)
Wonder what that would cost. - Santo_44
for me, I would not be to interested in those players.
even with all that cash being retained. |

I mean both fit under what the Leafs need at both positions.
Mantha has been pretty incredible defensively this season and is scoring.
Jensen is not perfect but neither was McCabe last year, turned out great with money retained. Allows you to spend more in FA. |

On the D market: Teams looking to upgrade their blueline with one of Tanev, Walker or Dumba know the asking price is still a 1st round pick for each. Maybe that changes closer to deadline day. Maybe someone bites the bullet. Game of chicken right now.
Arizona trying to say Dumba is the same as the other 2 because he shoots right
The buyers have to band together and say (frank) you to all these teams. |

In all my years of watching NHL hockey, I've never seen a guy get that open, so far up the ice. - Atomic Wedgie
It was such a weird play. Leafs won the draw and were pressing in front of the net. It was just a weird outcome ...Vegas gets lucky to get control of the puck and to be able to fire a 100' pass up the ice to some guy who's cherry picking like that.
Barabanov get the pat on the back from the coach who then says "don't (frank)ing ever do that again". If the Leafs maintain control he's standing at the Leafs blueline watching. |

Leafs are in LTIR cap space so waiting doesn't matter to them. They just need the totality of AAV's (not daily cap counts) on the roster to be no more than 83.5. |

I think they can all at least agree to hang up the phone when ARZ asks for a 1st for Dumba
They can at least band together on that one |

Ya, this is just negotiating in the media. I'm not sure any of those guys end up getting a 1st b/c I really think the market is setting up to favour buyers as the deadline approaches. Other than NJ every team below TBay and Nashville in the standings is already set up to be a seller - long odds to make the playoffs.
Provorov (if he's moved) and Hanafin probably need to happen to break the blueline dam. Tampa and Boston maybe? After that I really don't see a tonne of contenders dying for a top 4 RHD the way Dallas and Toronto are. Everybody could add one but I don't think many are going to pay big b/c it's not their primary need.
You look at the rosters of Vegas, Avs, Jets, Oilers, Nucks, Canes, Bruins, Rags, Panthers - most of them are pretty locked in to their top end RHD and have other primary needs.
Optimistically - maybe a team (Dallas) blinks and pays up on Tanev ..but after that I don't think any of these guys are getting even Giordano type prices.

Sean Walker is 28 at least and you can convince yourself its worth it if you sign him long term...the others? Yeah no.
Dallas is the one team that could maybe pay up. Will be interesting.
Time for NHL GMs to make some trades though. |

Quick look at the current RHD of other buyers and the only teams you could imagine identifying a top 4 RHD as a primary need are ..
Dallas, Toronto ......maybe Tampa and Edmonton.
Oilers have Ceci and Bouchard and have liked them both so I doubt it's top of their list. Plus they want to add a premium fwd.
Tampa looks more interested in a lefty like Hanafin or Provorov.
Optimistically, I think the Leafs are good to get a rental at a good price if they stay patient.
