So.... moneypuck has us up to a 45% chance to make the playoffs... the hell? We are 7 points out with only 20some games left with two of our top 6 wingers out.

7 points out of WC2 with 5 games in hand
7 points out of 3rd in Metro with 4 games in hand
52 possible standings points left on the table
I don't think they factor injuries. I do believe however that they factor in how a team is playing at 5 on 5 and special teams, though. |

Because of who else is left to play, you need a 14-9-3 record to have even a 50/50 shot at the post season.
Coincidentally, this is also the most likely possible record for the Penguins the rest of the way.
But the margin is super thin. Any one of those W's turned into an OTL, for example, drops your likelihood of the playoffs down to about 35% |

People around here the past month or so have been saying approximately 91 points is going to be the playoffs cut off this season... Is that where you're getting that record from?... 14-9-1 is 29 more points... 29 + current standings points of 62 = 91
Isnt there also assumptions that other teams will play as good, or bad, as they have on average the whole season up to this point?
Devils playoffs chances are 19.7% according to MP... Thats crazy low with around a 1/4 of a season, or more, left. |

With the report of Jake being wanted by Vancouver - the report also said he wants $8-9M in a new contract... I feel like that's something the Penguins should be willing to pay? If he does in fact want 8 years and that's the sticking point, fine. But then the only team he can sign for 8 years with is the team that trades for him.
$1 in Pittsburgh net of taxes goes a lot further than $1 in Vancouver net of taxes. |

Eh, maybe I am just being overly pessimistic... would be nice to squeeze into the postseason. I can then resell my seats at an upcharge ^_^ |

I live in Vancouver. One reason the Canucks are interested in Jake is as a hedge on Petterson. If Petterson doesn't resign in the offseason, The Canucks will trade him for a haul and look to extend Jake as his replacement
Good bit of business by JR if that's the way it plays out
PS, Hoglander is just a guy. A middle 6 at best who is super streaky. Not the blue chipper you'd want in a Jake trade. He's destined to be the guy who gets overpaid on potential and then you are stuck with an underwhelming winger. Too soft to play 3rd line and not effective enough to hold onto a Top 6 spot

I'm cautiously optimistic with the Flyers, waiting for the bottom to drop out. If the Pens can rattle off a few win streaks, I think they take the 3rd spot. Neither NJ or Washington worry me. |

No, no. You are not being too pessimistic. Penguins haven't shown any ability this season to keep winning streaks going. They can look like a world beater for a few games then basement dwellers the next few games. Add to this their two top wingers are out for weeks and I cant see how anyone could be very optimistic at this point. However, there really still is a chance mathematically.

An 8 year contract in Pittsburgh looks like 4 years of struggling to make the playoffs and 4 years in a complete tear down rebuild
Jake sees this and probably isn't interested in staying. Can't say I blame him

I've got it around 92/93 depending on team because of records remaining.
New Jersey, for example. needs to go at least 13-6-4 the rest of the way to have a greater than 50% chance at the playoffs.
They really need somebody ahead of them to fall off a cliff.

Wonder what the issue with Pettersson is? I feel like he has been treated pretty well overall by Vancouver. Was he pissed that they made Hughes the captain? Sounds like they were offering him all of the money at $12M per year.
Its amazing how it flipped from them apparently desperately trying to trade Miller to now keeping Miller and maybe trading Pettersson. Do have to wonder what our team would look like now if we had closed a Miller deal rather than Karlsson. I always felt like he would have been a great player to team up with Malkin. Was sad that never happened.

The difference in take-home on an $8 million contract would be $340k per year. |

The real debate was Horvat vs Miller. "Can't trade the Captain" (The Captain that lead them to losing records and missing the playoffs) and Miller who is passionate and holds his teammates accountable was viewed as a "problem"
Miller could have been had last year for Jake "straight up" Oh, to dream.......
Petterson is kind of a malcontent. The reason Hughes was made the Captain was largly due to this reason. Great player, very immature

Terrific movie.
Everyone raves about Howerton, and he's very good in it, but Baruchel is surprisingly good too. |

They’ve had Jake the last 7 yrs of misses or early exits. Yeah lock him up well past his prime while still having a trash bottom 6…..sign me up! |

They won the cup 7 years ago. Lost in round 2 of 2018 after they had played a ton of hockey the previous two seasons....but don't let facts get in the way of a "good" narrative. Also, insinuating that the 6th all time goals per playoff games (50 games minimum played) player was at much fault for early exits is another hot take.
Why assume they will have a trash bottom 6?
Dubas has already publicly said his approach for the bottom 6 failed. So, maybe he tries to, and successfully, changes it for the better...maybe he makes it worse....sure wish I had the all knowing and seeing of the future of "fans" like you, Sammy. |

Do you understand what opinions are?
Your opinion is that they are boring to watch. I know for a fact that hasn't been the opinion of a lot of the people who post around here this season. Been a lot of disappointing endings, for sure, but people, including myself, have been engaged in watching a lot of their games. If they haven't straight up said "that game was entertaining", which I can remember at least half a dozen others saying around here regarding a game, you can tell they are invested from the comments and posts made here.
So, this "they are boring, sorry its true" is your opinion. Its neither right nor wrong. Its yours. That's how opinions work.
I was including this season as well. 6 years and 8 months ago they hoisted a cup. |

Crosby is clearly the problem. Haven't won a Cup going on 7 years and he's past his prime and Pens have a trash bottom 6. Best to trade him while they can. |

I want to trade Jake here at the deadline, but the Pens failures are definitely not Jake related. He has been a PPG player in both the regular season and playoffs at a $6M salary. He has done his part.
