In short - yes.

In long, he offers what we don't have on D - size, muscle, a booming shot and a bit of meanness. You have to love that because on the Leafs that would stand out like the voice of God. It goes until he's 36. You can't love that.

With the cap raising year over year, the impact of the contract will lessen - but not that drastically. For instance the $6.5m in year 1 will feel like about $5m comparatively by current standards (assuming the cap increases by $4m annually) in its final year. It might still be high for a 36 year old D-man, but not ostentatiously high and our window will very likely be beginning to close by then, so capitalizing on the next 4-5 years is really what the focus should be anyway.

Yep. And Willy is 9 points ahead of Marner now, even though Marner gets to play with one of the greatest scorers of all time in Matthews. All for 6.9 cap hit.
