This level of optimism is adorable. Or delusional, which is also adorable!
GMs at the trade deadline are like people at an auction. I mean . . . you have the money but you shouldn't spend it, but you _can_, but you shouldn't, but if it wasn't meant to spent, why do you have it? But you shouldn't. But if that guy thinks it's worth that and you have the money and you can spend it and it's there to spend it, why wouldn't you spend it?
Any smart person can talk themselves into anything dumb. That's easy.
It's getting a dumb person to talk themselves into smart that's a challenge. - Monkeypunk
GMs used to trade a 1st,2nd and a 3rd for Martin Hanzel.
They have gotten smarter.
Or maybe the better word is less dumb |

the draft in 2025 will suck for the Leafs as they will not have a draft pick in the first 4 rounds - dmnted
But we have Chicago's 5th round pick, which will practically be a 4th.

You kinda pushed me down an internet rabbit hole on this one.
San Jose currently sits at .302 and is trending downward.
Chicago is at .292 and I am confident they can continue to suck.
The last time two teams finished below .300 was 1995-96 - San Jose and Ottawa. - Atomic Wedgie
Chicago wants to pair Bedard with Celebrini. San Jose needs a goddamned life preserver. I say Arizona wins the draft lottery and ruins Macklin Celebrini before he can be a star.

I ASSURE YOU there will be a GM to prove you wrong here
We always say GMs get smarter but then they make Chiarot trades - Aaron_85
Or the double double Douglas Murray trade. There's always some bullpoop with a "tough" defenseman every season |

I don't want a 34 year old Savard hampering the Leafs in getting an actual good top 4 D in free agency that can help them for years.
It is they retain a good chunk of his cap hit or move on for me. Might as well just get a rental at that point, its cheaper. - Santo_44
Oh I agree. It doesn't make sense for the Leafs unless the Habs are trying to move him and his cap hit and willing to do it at less than the premium.
Habs know they can probably move him next deadline for a 2nd and prospect as a rental. So if they like him ...they keep him until then unless its an offer better than that. It's why guys with term aren't often moved b/c teams will demand a premium over the rental prices (unless they're trying to move the contract).
I'd expect the Leafs only drop premium futures for a younger guy with term. |

That was 6-7 years ago, I think . . . we are not that much smarter. People were just eating horse paste to cure a virus. I'm not sure we're not collectively getting worse.
But . . . NYR traded a 1st, 2nd and 5th for Andrew Copp and the Jets also received a prospect who is a regular in their lineup in Morgan Barron.
Washington traded a 1st, a 2nd, Panik and Vrana for Anthony Mantha.
Ottawa traded Pageau for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
That's just in the last 3 deadlines.
Someone will do something stupid. Someone always does.

between now and then, there are 2 playoffs...so will really depend what happens.
if they are again....early exits..trade players for picks...if thats what they want

I do agree Savard likely stays...but who knows.
I just want Jensen/Mantha or Gudbranson/Kuraly all retained. I throw Savard in there because he also makes sense retained. I have done the math on cap friendly, the math works and they can keep 3 goalies and have 23 man rosters in both scenarios.
I think using that 1st to get another McCabe d is important. Going into next year with McCabe and another D capable of top 4 mins getting a combined 4M means they can go nuts and try and sign a Roy or Pesce. |

Man, since he signed his big ticket, Nylander only has 28 points in 22 games. Everybody knew he was gonna fall off like that when he got paid. |

As a Leafs fan, I'm hoping he outperforms Marner for the next 1.5 years. |

I think we should trade him in the next week before his contract becomes and anchor... Just like his last one was.

I don't want to just "make it work"
Might as well have just paid the price for Tanev and signed him rather than have Savard at 3.5M at 34 years old next year - Santo_44
so youd prefer to give Tanev more than 3.5M at 34 years old? |

And one will cost a 1st because "term" |
