I'm usually pretty optimistic about this team. The playoffs are always a chance to show change from the year before, but for the first time in the Matthews era, I'm struggling to see it.
I need Tree to do something that will actually move the needle for me to hop back on the wagon. Right now, I'm just not impressed.

The problem is he's signed for a billion more years, not sure of any precedent of a legit player with a decent contract and term being retained, so not sure there are any comparables.

Keeping him simply doesn’t make sense for the leafs tho.

He’s a top six non physical winger. In order for him to get his ideal role on the leafs Marner or Nylander need to go down (injured obv.). He isn’t the physical net crashing type like Knies or Bertuzzi.

So he will never be anything more than a guy they use as a backup because he’s not strong enough as a two way guy to be a full time 3rd liner and he’s nowhere near physical enough to be a 4th.

There's nothing wrong with playing him with them. Like, at all. Skill is skill and he can score. He's also really good at going after pucks and has improved his defensive game steadily.

I would still package him in a trade for Parayko, though. I feel like he's a D-man specifically made to play with Rielly.
