Wayne Simmonds and Mike Johnson seemed to think it was a bad move.

So did Craig Button.

3 guys with opinions that don’t carry much water imo.

Well since everyone knows (frank) all about the guy but are convinced that a 4th round pick is somehow more valuable, these lines are more valuable than the female doging that's going on.

Sure, that still doesnt mean you trade them for bad players. It was overpayment for what Dewar is. which is a small 4th line forward.
- Archaic

Serious ? - what do you think a 4th line pic should get you in a trade?

Guess nobody wanted to give it up for that super valuable 4th round pick eh?

🙄

- Cush29

over last 25 years the best 4th round leafs picked were Ponikarovsky and then Frattin. Reimer there as well but goalies get drafted oddly.

and a 4th liner with 10 goals?

That fact alone makes me think he may very well have 3rd line potential.

if he gets willy off the PK, its the steal of the deadline
- drexel

Willy could be a great PK weapon if he'd just bloody commit. His little stick parabola sweeps that miss the puck carrier by a solid four feet are pretty useless and no one is worried - because he's not moving his feet. As it stands, you're right - he's useful when someone else is doing the work to get the puck.

I do wonder how much is micromanagement by the coaching staff because he was closing on the puck carriers more earlier in the season - and had more effective PK numbers. But I suppose you get burnt once or twice and they fail to see the upside and change the approach. Marner used to be more effective on the PK when he was up in the play and threatening the point men - daring them to move the puck laterally. Now he's back and passive and it basically creates all sorts of seams.

Note - this is not to say that Willy is a good defender and the coaching staff is holding him back, but more to say that when an offensive player with burst acceleration threatens you high in the zone - you are forced to rush a pass or dump the puck away. There's an advantage to that.

So honestly - what do you think a 4th round pick should fetch and what do you think you're apt to draft with it - because that's the bottom line. Using a 4th and nothing more to acquire an NHL player with at least 3 RFA years is not bad.

I agree he's undersized, but there are lots of undersized guys who know how to play the game and be effective. This guy has some very solid defensive numbers with decent offensive numbers. The things that standout as poor are his DZ exits with possession and his passing. He gets a lot of shots, he separates puck carrier from puck effectively and he is reliable with the puck in his own zone - as long as he doesn't try and skate it through the opposition. He even makes smart outlet passes and generates a fair number of shots on net for his role.

If you look at all the trades that happened in the last few days, this seems like an overpayment for a 4th line forward to me.

Toffoli went for a 3rd and a 2nd. The Leafs paid a 3rd and a 5th for Lybushkin ffs. My gripe isnt specifically with the player. but what appears to me to be very poor trades. Why did they pay for retention for the previous players just to add Dewar?

People are activing like no good players ever come out of the 4th round.

numbers and lines on a screen compared to actual play. I'm convinced!

I agree. Let’s wait to see the kid play first.

Regardless, trade deadline has come and gone. Accept what they have. Cheer them on, and hope experience will start to pay off.

Seems like poor strategy and execution. You dont hear that from Vegas. They just execute. Its what good GMs do.

I'd say he's more like a feistier version of Kampf, more hitty/punchy.

Our PK is abysmal; and guys like Nylander should be playing less PK.

Because you cant trade away every single pick for poopty players. The you get into the situation like today where you have nothing good to trade. I am fine with trading away picks, but for good players.

He is not a good player. He has been in an out of Minnesota's lineup this year, and is his moving the needle? Its wasted assets IMO. In what world is paying a 4th round pick for a bad small 4th line player a good idea?

- Archaic

57 of 67 games, just missed 6 with an injury...... So although 4 line type he has not been in and out. He is also good for the PK

None of them can PK as effectively. Dewar, amongst Minnesota forwards, had the best SA/60, GA/60, expected GA/60, Chances against/60, HD chances against/60 and the second fewest Scoring Chances Against/60 of all their regularly deployed forwards on the PK. He was on the second unit, so he was still typically facing the opposition's top PP line.

I don't have a problem with this acquisition at all. Not everyone has to be a 6'5 knuckle dragger. You need guys to fill roles and we have very few successfully filling the PK role as it is.

Vegas is executing cap circumvention. Their roster's cap hit is gonna be way over when Stone is back.

Who knows, maybe Klingberg will resurface for the playoffs.

Bad day eh. Jesus.

You never know anything can happen in playoffs especially (injury, hot tender, etc.) but damn. The first round match that already bullies this Leafs team got more physical and mean. Yikes.

- Big23Questions

Leafs were definitely not bullied last night. Maroon is a tool. Loved it when he was on the ice in the playoffs last year. Reaves will tune him if he really wants to go
