In Scott Wheeler's breakdown of Leaf prospects, he didn't crack the top-15 but is mentioned as being outside of the top-15. So he basically has very little expectations of being an NHL regular. Listed at 5'10 / 165 (although doing okay in 20 games in the AHL he has 7 goals, 3 assists), I'm not sure he has NHL size given his limitations - but he has some fantastic moves with the puck. I believe he had a fantastic shootout move that made highlight reels last year.

Keep in mind 3 of those 7 goals was a hatty he got against Grand Rapids by playing top mins and getting PP time because a number of his teammates were sick. So he proves he can pull off a good game but it also means his point production in the other 19 games was nothing special.

Analysis of the trade deadline for the Leafs is this: They picked up a decent defenseman in Joel Edmundson. A 4th line penalty killer and a defensive college prospect. They gave a few late round picks, but kept their 1st. Many would say, it was a failure, since many of the stronger teams picked up players of value to their team. It's all nice and good to speculate on players that the Leafs wanted but could never afford, thanks to Kyle Dubas buying of rentals and giving away 1st rounders for nothing in return, the next season. Tampa, Boston and Florida did the same. The only difference is Tampa, Boston and Florida have no first round picks and few picks going forward for at least 3 years. At least the Leafs were able to use a first rounder last year to get Easton Cowan and Fraser Minton the year before as a second rounder. They do have a couple of high end prospects coming in the next year or two.

On the downside, the salary cap is a significant issue going forward. I'm not sure of the status of William Nylander, approaching July 1st. If he's still tradeable, I'd do it and rebalance their cap issues and restock the draft pick cupboard. The Leafs will never be able compete on Trade Deadline day, if they have no picks and are capped out. Timothy Lilijgren isn't physical enough to be on this team. He's a liability out there and he needs to be moved at the end of the season. Another Dubas experiment with his Major Junior analytics b.s. It doesn't compute in the NHL. Very few under 6' defensemen make it, unless they are top drawer candidates. Ottawa did the same thing when they drafted a heralded defender in Erik Brännström. Small and unable to play big minutes in the NHL on defense. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lilijgren as the odd man out in game one of the playoffs.

Leafs goaltending is fine. It's the defensive side of the game that makes our goaltenders vulnerable. Too many people talking smack about the Leafs needing a high end goalie. They never talk about the cost, especially in cap space and players going the other way. At least the Leafs goalies are under $5M in total on the Cap.

Lastly, coaching. Keefe does a few things fine, but he's not the best teacher. He's more of a manager and not a teacher of the game. The playoffs will either garner him a new contract or put an end to it. The GM still needs a couple of more years to put his type of team on the ice. He's already made them tougher, but needs some more larger and tougher defensemen. A solid puck mover on the right side is a must.

I used to play in my company softball league (technically I used to convene the bloody thing for nearly a decade) and back in 2015 or so I'd lost a bunch of weight and was sticking with the program - so I was drinking Molson 67 all day at the softball tournament. So you know . . .you show up at 8am, coffee - probably with Baileys, and then onto the beer for the day. I mean I paced myself to some degree, but around midnight we're back at a teammates' place hanging in the backyard and he pulls out this breathalyzer. Some of the guys - who had planned to spend the night - were blowing obscene numbers. I hadn't had a beer in about 45 minutes - and blew 0.0. I'd been drinking this stuff ALL day. Just at a pace of about 1 an hour.

Blew a 0.0. And you know for the past few hours of conversation - you become increasingly aware that everyone around you is just utterly smashed and you're feeling surprisingly fine. Arguments were like playing tic tac toe with a blind person . . .like, "You're awful at this!"

Way I see it, there's four every game guarantee D in- Rielly, Liljegren, McCabe, and Boosh.

Then there's the guys that can rotate in and out between themselves for the last two spots- Benoit, Brodie, Edmundson, and Timmins. (I'd have Benoit closer to playing every game than the others)

And unfortunately, Gio probably shouldn't play again. Timmins could be close to this, too.

Last time I was in Montreal I went to the hotel bar, asked the bartender to put on the Leafs game (after ordering a $24 espresso martini) and he flat out said no. And there were 8 TVs in there, and about the same number of people. Nobody was watching TV.
