Again, I don't know where you get your information from, but it's not planet earth. In the past four games against the top teams, Pettersson has two goals and two assists. The only team he didn't score against was Colorado, last night. He was also +4 over those four games and 57.05% on the faceoffs. He didn't play well last night.

So his salary, which is low as he’d already been paid 2/3 of it and is low at a 4.85 million cap hit, doesn’t affect the team financially. It’s his on-ice play that’s affecting the team. It hasn’t been great, at least offensively, defensively he’s been fine, with the exception of a few games.

As for what he'll get paid, who knows, guys are always over-paid in free agency and teams with specific needs, especially at center, tend to overpay players. I would definitely not be surprised to see a team offer him 7.5-8.5 million on a long term deal. Happens every year.
