its the Leafs playoff failures isnt it
- senstroll

It's a little bit of artificial drama to keep things interesting.

I don't expect the Lightning to catch the Leafs for the #3 Atlantic spot. While it's not mathematically impossible, it's extremely unlikely. It would require the Lightning to run the table during the stretch and for the Leafs to completely collapse. What makes this scenario interesting is, both teams have shown in the past they are capable of playing those roles.

If the Lightning want to prove they are still a serious playoff threat, overtaking Toronto for #3 would make that statement. If the Leafs hold off a surging Tampa and retain the #3 spot with authority, then it would send a message that the Leafs are unquestionably the better team in Blue and White at this time.

Lightning are five points back and the Leafs have a game in hand. These clubs also have two four-point games to play.

Very unlikely that anything changes the Atlantic standings, but it might be a storyline to keep an eye on, just for poops and giggles.

After 8 years of total system failure, nuclear meltdowns, catastrophic implosions, I’m really apathetic towards even watching them go through it again.

Give me Florida. Or Boston. Or Colorado or whoever the best team is because at some point they’ll have to slay the dragon. But they don’t have what it takes imo. Tampa brings more fire, more passion. Florida and Boston are better built and coached.

I’ll watch the games, but that’s the time of year when the fishings good, so I’ll be easily persuaded to go do that.

I'm looking forward to the two matchups these teams have remaining. It's one of those rare times that I don't care who ends up winning. I can just enjoy the game and root for both teams. Ducherov for the Ross and Matthews for the Rocket.

The Leafs are fundamentally flawed.

I'll watch the playoffs expecting the worst while very tepidly hoping for the best.

Maybe the 7th year is the charm?
But ya, im not expecting much from a team that is 5th in the east and 10th (still pretty good) in the league in pts.
Gotta hope for a goalie to get real hot!

We shall see.

Noone expected the Isles to goto the conference finals a few years ago or for Florida to overcome a 40 point regular season difference to beat Boston in round. We just gotta get some luck as you said. A few bounces go our way. Goalie gets hot.

Im hoping this year, we have more luck, our superstars are superstars and our goalie is a wall for the most part.
The leafs are due for a good long run.

I fully expect this team to kick things up a notch come playoffs, we've seen glimpses of it throughout the year. They know that the only thing that matters is the playoffs. I remember last year how different the team looked in round 1. Like you said, random teams get hot and go deep, statistically we're due, right? RIGHT?!?!?!

There are a number of factors that are interesting - the playoffs are a completely different animal because the NHL is the only sport where, despite objections to the contrary from the league, they use a different rulebook than the one from the regular season. It is not only far more violent, it is hyped up to be and expected to be. Charging becomes normal. Hard, dangerous hits 2-3 seconds after the puck is gone occur with frequency. Holding, hooking and tripping are unenforced - and all you get is the question of when will the official decide that _now_ is a time to shift momentum by calling a penalty - because you don't know. It's like a game of moshpit musical chairs - everyone is running around violently hitting each other but when the music stops, you better find a goddamned chair.

In the past several years the teams that have advanced to the Cup Finals have been mediocre in most possession statistics, including shots for and shots surrendered. Typically they all have positive HD metrics, and where they have excelled is in their cumulative HD results - like Shooting % and Save percentage. This is, like every playoff stat, not a hard and fast rule - Colorado had the worst save percentage of any team past the 1st round and won the cup in 2022. Tampa and Vegas had the best HD shooting and goaltending in their recent cup wins of teams advancing past the first round.

The problem with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season is that everything they do is just mediocre. Including HD chance generation, HD results, and HD defense. Maybe that can change in the playoffs, as you hope, but I would like to at least see something trending towards that in the last 15 games instead of unspirited efforts like last night's.

To be honest, I had little emotional investment in last night's game.

Win, lose, whatever. Turned it off in the 2nd period.

I'm looking forward to watching McDavid on Saturday night (let's hope Mitchy is back on the ice), but really I'm just waiting for the playoffs.

There was a little spark in the third, which was good to see, but FFS Keefe has to get these guys motivated to start the game rather than giving up a goal in the first 19 seconds. Torts (or someone similar) would never allow that.

I expect the Leafs play a much better game on Saturday, they probably get an early lead, hold it until half way through the third, then who TF knows what happens.

There's an amazing interview out there - Hal was going to be a TSN Sportsdesk anchor.

But then TSN decided we weren't ready for a black TSN Sportsdesk anchor - Edit: two black anchors, as they already had Mark Jones. No, seriously.

That's part of the origin story of Body Break.

I'll see if I can find it.

Edit:

I think their statement was they saw him struggling with things likely attributed to CTE, but I don't think it's official yet.
