- No matter how good L3 is, it doesn’t get as much ice as the Top 2 lines. No way you play Marner 3rd line minutes

I think it's fair to say that Matthews is a top 3 player, top 5 at worst. McDavid, MacKinnon, Matthews, Kucherov, Draisaitl?

Does he need help driving a line? I think he can handle it on his own. You could load up that 2nd line or you could create 3 lines that could carry the play IF Marner can drive a line.

I completely see where you’re coming from man but just a difference of opinion. I’ve said it alit on here that I thing Marner is a fantastic PKer but 5v5 he makes really bad choices with the puck in all 3 zones and specifically where it typically kills ya - within a couple feet of the blue (both ends).

Marner will never play a regular of D in a meaningful game unless it’s an absolute emergency I don’t think. Spotting him when pushing for a goal, or when the team has a dman hurt late in a game or having him back there on the PP is one thing. But logging regular minutes no chance.

Yup, they lit it up against a team fighting for a playoff spot. Its a good start, lets see if they can be consistent against better teams.

Matthews just got 5 points without Marner.

Marner driving a 3rd line after Matthews and Nylander are driving the top 2 would be ideal. Besides, who wouldn't want Marner's elite defensive prowess playing 3rd line minutes while making the line a threat to score at any moment?

He could make up the balance of his usual minutes on special teams.

If there was ever any doubt about Matthews being a Super Saiyan with the power to rend mountains and shatter entire planets, that doubt is now removed.

By my rough count, Matthews has approx. 30 multi-point games this season, including two different 5-point games.

Ovi has had a lock out season, a shortened season due lock out AND covid. Otherwise he likely would have had it already. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't recall Gretz having seasons like that.

Matthews would have to pick up his game a little bit to accomplish that (sounds weird i know).
After 8 seasons, Matthews is about 100pts behind where ovi was at.
Granted this one isnt over yet.
