Nice win.
But too many hits into double plays.
Hitting will be an issue again, turning into something similar to how the leafs constantly had D issues for years

not going to do much when your top 3 hitters are all under 700 ops. Springer, Bo and Vlad off to a slow start.

also, funny the NYY lead the league in grounding into double plays

Bro...I don't know what your point is. It doesn't change this is Mickey Mouse from the NHL. Could have been hyping this up for way longer. Apparently they told players just the other night.
- Aaron_85

They couldn’t have been hyping this up for way longer because they won’t have anything to hype up until they have a deal.

According to Chris Johnson, the league decided to move the franchise after a meeting with Muruelo about a month ago. They’ve been proceeding on a bunch of fronts including negotiating with both Smith in Utah and Muruelo and preparing a contingent schedule since then. The deal gives Muruelo the right to bring in a new franchise if he gets an acceptable arena in place. The details about what constitutes an acceptable arena are complicated or contentious and have slowed the process. The league wants to avoid using its termination authority which would lead to a court fight with Muruelo. They’ve presumably made enough progress to let the players know it’s happening.

The league has (frank)ed up by tying itself to Muruelo for so long. I don’t think they’ve handled this process that badly.

From a Lightning blogger I follow :

Even the Lightning’s opponent is still undecided. With the loss, Boston threw away their chance to finish atop the Eastern Conference. With 109 points they still sit atop the Atlantic Division, but Florida is just one point behind them. The Bruins host Ottawa tonight in their final game of the season while the Panthers are home for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Auston Matthews quest for 70 goals (he’s at 69, nice). The Lightning will get whichever team finished atop of the Atlantic Division while the Leafs get the loser.

The bolded and underlined is my emphasis.

Even the Lightning bloggers are in on the Matthews 69 joke.

So many bizarre things. Muruelo has long said he plans to bid on a plot of land in northeast Phoenix, but apparently had been told at the onset of this planning that it was not feasible due to a complete lack of infrastructure to support the water and power requirements in that area and an untenable cost to make that happen. Since Muruelo proceeded and disregarded the information, the mayor's office went public with it - and that seems to have precipitated this rapid movement by the NHL. It's almost like they finally realized this guy is a lying piece of poop and decided it was time to cut bait - but why they would offer him first rights on a new franchise is completely inconceivable. He doesn't deserve to be there.

Now he's back to pestering the Phoenix mayor's office sending them letters asking for meetings about setting up this entertainment district - that like all billionaires he has no interest in funding at all but has every interest in reaping the rewards from it.

So basically Muruelo intends to buy a plot of land in northeast Phoenix, and from here I'd speculate that he likely wants the city to build the entertainment district and build the infrastructure in the desert to support it, including water, power, roads and so on - and this is an area where there's literally nothing at all as I understand it - so the city can lose money that it will never recoup based on all historical data on the finances surrounding the Phoenix Coyotes, and then Alex Muruelo can buy a new franchise that will appreciate in value by 200% in 5 years and he can sell it after putting no additional money or effort into it.

Geez. Why wouldn't Phoenix want to go along with that plan?

It's a little bit more nuanced and complicated than that.

The land he is bidding on is in Phoenix.

But it's right next to Scottsdale - literally on the border.

It's the mayor of Scottsdale who is saying they can't and won't provide the necessary infrastructure upgrades - including water hookups.

It's probably a bit of a powerplay, as the mayor of Scottsdale also admits that he doesn't like the idea of a new "Entertainment District" being plunked down right there, as it will cannibalize revenues from existing businesses located in Scottsdale.

At the very least, it's a message the mayor of Scottsdale is sending to both Murelo and to the mayor of Phoenix - if you are going to build this thing, you will be responsible for all of the infrastructure costs - including water rights.

This article explains it:

I think a lot will hinge on the details in the agreement about the conditions Muruelo has to meet about a new arena in order to be able to get the franchise back. The league is stuck between wanting to avoid litigation which might come if they just terminated his franchise and wanting to be rid of the guy. My guess is that they’re trying to get language that sets the bar high into the deal.

Also, the development deal he’s been talking about is a $5-6B and Muruelo doesn’t have that kind of money and apparently no other developers have stepped up.

Another interesting tidbit I read:

Other developers were wary of bidding on the plot of land, for fear of being accused of being the ones who made the Coyotes leave.

Now that they are leaving, with a very murky road back, several developers are now interested in bidding on the plot.

During the 13-year playoff drought in Buffalo, the #sabres have now churned through seven head coaches: Lindy Ruff, Ron Rolston, Ted Nolan, Dan Bylsma, Phil Housley, Ralph Krueger and Don Granato.

They're now looking for No. 8.

Yup. The Leafs remain terminally flawed - they lack balance throughout the lineup and a goalie that can play consistently (yes, yes - many teams suffer that last point).

I'm liking the grit added per the d-corps, but I'm not sure it will be enough unless Samsonov (or Woll) has an outstanding playoff run.

Hoping for something seismic to happen in the off-season. *eyes shift to Marner*

If the Leafs get bounced in the first round (tough matchup), you think Lord Shanaplan will be let go along with O'Keefe?

That's nuts. I've seen fossils in stonework, but never a hominid. That's absolutely wild.

I guess it's not shocking. I have heard stories from my stepson about the Florida phosphate mines. They find ancient human remains and just ignore them and keep processing material. By law, all work is supposed to stop immediately and the state gets called in. That would cost millions in lost productivity, so they just keep it quiet.

couple things. that may change the fate.
Tree added toughness. word is that helps in the playoffs, we will see

the Leafs have changed up the lines over the last whatever'ish games that Marner was out. more balanced and AM not with MM can spread out the threats more. imo will help in the playoffs, more than the toughness part..but if they win, im sure thats what will get the most of the credit.

hope its not just decided by PP/PK
