Two thoughts.
1. AM was very good game 1 and awesome game 2 before getting sick then injured. Wonder what he would have looked like 7 games healthy away from MM?
2. Part of the problem with our playoff scoring might be the forwards have to be overcautious because of our below average D and questionable goaltending. Punctuated by next to no scoring from the backend. Edmundson, Boosh and Benoit helped our goalie but not our scoring so much. Lilly should provide some spark but he has Marneritis, Mccabe is OK offensively but likely average to below average. Reilly can move the puck and get assists but not so much scoring.
We need a PP QB, better 2 way D and some timely saves. - jribout
Am was good one game...thats it. He has 2 -3 goals in his past 10 - 11 games.
Marner didn't make him worse, dont be foolish. |

Saros, 22nd overall, Evangalista or Tomasino
Marner
Saros extension 8x7.5M
Marner 8x12M - Santo_44
8 years for a goalie is bad.
Saros is meh, 3/4 years max
Also Toronto needs to get more than that.
Marner would sign for less due to taxes |

750K in actual dollars remaining on his contract after July 1st.
99 points last year and on pace for 101 this year.
Would probably sign on the spot if said team was willing to give him the dough...based on his past negotiations.
Will bring back a haul. |

Speaking of taxes, did JT try to do his own taxes? Maybe using TurboTax or something?

Him, Josh Donaldson, Russ Martin and one other Jay all got hit for the way they structured their Retirement Compensation Arrangements which is what they use to defer taxes on their big signing bonuses. If CRA really cracks down on them it could take away an advantage Canadian teams have in competing with low tax American states. |

Great.
Goalies change year to year, hard to read. Hes only played 3 seasons of 50 plus games.

On a 1 year deal bringing him to UFA, unless he agrees to resign before getting traded his value depreciates a lot. Leafs media guys have been saying the same thing, they might not "win" a Marner trade but the win comes from the leafs getting some cap flexibility. Trade the guy for whatever best roster players you can get back, preferably a puck moving D man that can play the PP, and then use the rest of the cap space to sign a UFA forward (or more D). |

This I agree with. But I could see Saros wanting a huge contract in terms of AAV. If Bob gets 10m, why shouldn't Saros? |

Toronto media are usually full of poop most days.
Hes a 90 - 99pt player...any other team and they would be saying he'd get a boat load back |

I'm just saying, its the part that he's a rental at this point that might really hurt his value, unless it's clear to the team trading him that he will sign with them. No one is going to give up 4 OA and their best prospect for a 1 year rental. That would destroy a team like Columbus that is already terrible. |

Yeah, I feel like teams maybe have a bit more sense to hand out 10m for a goalie now after seeing how its worked out for Price and Bob. But I still think he'd get more than 7.5m on the open market. Maybe ~9m from the right team? I don't necessarily think it's the smart at all though.
A team like Nashville tends to play a style of play that makes things a bit easier on their goalies so why pay a premium for the goalie if you can just call up the next guy and get (hopefully) similar results? |
