I'm an industrial Electrician, and the shipyard was the biggest payer in town. It still pails in comparison to what the Oil Giants out here pay with the disparity in the cost of living not being what most make it out to be. 10% difference in sales tax alone.
- Cape Breton Bruins

yeah, i was kind of floored by the cost of living here.............other than housing, which is relatively cheap, EVERYTHING here costs a bloody fortune.

taxes, gas, and electricity are the ones that REALLY blew me away though

i think that's part of the reason why the shipyards here were awarded that massive naval shipbulding contract. i expect that will help.......at least for a little while. going to need tradesmen, engineers, financial people, etc.
- sensarmy_11

Irving will find a way to (frank) that up.

they better not.....(frank)ers

actually, they aren't designing it or anything......they're being given a blueprint from the German Navy, and are building the ship almost EXACTLY the same.

i fully expect them to take longer and cost more.......but that's just the reality with all big contracts like this.

no chance..............too many balls are rolling for that contract to be cancelled. also, our supply ship on teh west coast is now dead.

things like helicopters and jets are one thing, because we have assets in place that can still do the job.

the ships are different.

they'll be built

ottawa also has surrounding areas, with pretty high populations. if you added orleans, kanata, nepean, gloucester, etc, to the pop of ottawa, you're probably hovering in the 1.3-1.5 mil range.

anyways, like i said, not a city pissing match...........was just pointing out that prock is a douche

for prock....this was an interview given to the media today:

"I think the plan is to go back at the end of April to California and check in there and we’ll be out to our place in Wyoming area and spend the summer half there half here and I know we’re going to try and get into contract talks right away because none of us really want to delay anything if we can get it done, that’ll be ideal, and if we can I think we have an understanding that they know I want to be here and I’m committed to the team and the structure going forward." - Bobby Ryan

certainly sounds like he wants to leave.

Think Alfredsson is going to retire? Or maybe you can nab him and Gonchar back and pretend this year didn't happen?

So almost half the size. Gotcha. Regardless, it has much more to do with just population. Vancouver is consistently on the top 5 most desirable cities to live in worldwide. I've lived in both cities and if I could afford it i'd still be in Vancouver.
- golfingsince

Ottawa/Gatineau has been the fourth largest city in terms of population, for quite a while now.

i'd take alfi back.............not gonchar.

i do think alfredsson will come back......but it won't be to ottawa. as long as melnyk is owner, i doubt he'll have anything to do with this team.

I'm sure there are lots of lower income folks and retirees that really love Ottawa.

So toronto is better because it has the highest housing costs, the worst traffic, a Mayor who is known outside of the GTA, more smog advisories and the highest cost of living in the country.

well on top of getting a ton out of later-round prospects, Detroit also seems to have a direct pipeline to the fountain of youth. So he may just re-sign there.

In any case, maybe you go after a guy like Grabovski?

Or a dman like Hainsey?

i think if alfi plays, it will definitely be in detroit.

i can't see the sens going after another forward........just spend the money re-signing the ones they already have.

as for d-men, they really need someone who can play on the top line with karlsson, hainsey is not the answer to that.

hopefully package together some assets for a guy like ehrhoff or edler.....that would be my preference

I think Ottawa has to be really careful. Ryan is a good player but, not an elite talent. If they stay in the $6m for 6 years, okay. But, I fear they might do an 8 year deal. Too much.

ottawa has the highest average income of any city in the country.

and the median age of the population is exactly teh same in both toronto and ottawa

No, it has the highest housing costs because it's a better city, and people want to live here. Same with traffic, and cost of living. Higher demand because it's better.

Why would he sign for $6M per year, and get taxed at 40%, when he can go to Philly or New Jersey, sign for $7M, and get taxed half that.
