The Kessel thing is interesting, in that he'd add some experience and scoring depth for what I'd assume is league minimum. I was looking at the 2006 draft, where he was taken 5th overall, he's only eight points away from 1000 for his career. Claude Giroux, who was taken 22nd overall, is the top point producer from that draft with 1045 points, and climbing....what a great pick by the Flyers!!

Ya I mean Allvin and Tocc have built up enough trust in their process that if they see a fit for him, why not? I guess it's good to have insurance/depth, and the PP has been bad of late, so maybe he helps kickstart PP2? Just wondering about his conditioning and skating. They haven't been his calling card, and now that he's been out of it for a while it seems difficult to see him fitting into Tocc's high-energy high-pressure system.

I was just reading on X that Mikheyev has spent an hour on the PP this season and has zero points, they need someone better than that to help out the PP.

Ya Mik's ice time and impact have been declining recently. But he's still a useful/responsible two way forward... not sure if you're adding Phil in for the few PP minutes a game, that his 5 on 5 game justifies that. But, we'll see how he does in Abby in the next few days here. Some Canucks quotes about him:

“Yeah, Jim (Rutherford, Vancouver president of hockey operations) the last couple of weeks was talking to his agent,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said after his team’s 4-2 win at the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

“He’s going to go down there and skate for two or three days. We’ll see how he is down there and reevaluate from there.”

“I haven’t talked to him at all,” Tocchet said. “But I know Phil, especially from the Pittsburgh days.”

Asked what he thought Kessel could add, Tocchet said: “I don’t know, I haven’t seen him skate. I have to see how he’s skating down there, to be honest with you.”

...

“I played with Phil for a while,” said Canucks forward Conor Garland, who played with Kessel on the Coyotes from 2019-21. “[He’s] one of my close friends, so I’m just excited. I’ll probably go see him tomorrow in Abbotsford.

“It’s more of just, I’m glad to see someone who is so good hopefully get another chance. He deserves a shot in this league, and he’s a three-time (Stanley) Cup winner and a Hall of Famer, and I think he deserves to play. We’ll see what happens, but I’m just happy for him.”

...

Canucks forward Dakota Joshua said it was “great news” to hear Kessel would be skating in Abbotsford.

“Just another veteran presence, someone who’s won before, and it’s nice to have those guys in the room,” he said. “That’d be a big help.”

Guy, the Canucks are the best team in the league according to the NHL standings. The only team with a .700 win plus win percentage now. They are on track to be the president's trophy winners. That's all that matters.

Marwood - I just wanted you to know, today is Arizona's birthday, marking 112 years of statehood. February 14th, 1912 President William Howard Taft signed the legislation that officially made Arizona the 48th U.S. state.

Yeah, not sure why he took a shot at the Canucks. They are a really good team right now. Watching the game last night reminded me of the mid-'10s Hawks. Fast, skilled, heavy when needed but not egregious, solid goalie, good forecheck. I hope they do well as they are exciting to watch. Quinn is a monster.

The Hawks have a ton of young talent that will filter in over the next three years. Any Hawks success will greatly depend on how those players pan out. They've concentrated on good/fast skaters, high compete, and work ethic. Sounds great in theory, but it needs to be shown on ice.

Blackhawks did well in drafting D in the past couple years. I do feel really bad for Bedard that he isn't going to have anyone to play with for a couple of seasons. Lukas Reichel is having a very disappointing season.

Kessel coming to the Canucks is like Sundin coming to the Canucks - it's going to mess with chemistry. Unless there's a long-term injury to some 3rd line guy and you just want someone with a shot on the 2nd PP line.

I don't think they sign Kessel, unless he's going to be a black ace, at this point because he hasn't played in almost a year and it'll take him until the playoffs to get into game shape anyways. Depth is nice, but you want someone that can slot in right away in case someone like Garland, Joshua, Hoglander gets hurt and can replace them until they come back. I don't think at this point that Kessel is that player, especially when no one even took a chance on him in training camp on a PTO, probably because he's lost so many steps that he just can't keep up anymore.

A quick look at who Pettersson has spent the most time playing with this year tells you there should be no problem fitting him in if he's still able to play.

I don't think skating has ever been his strong suit, and I doubt it's been getting better this past year. They might sign him to a contract in Abby and wait the three weeks to see how he adjusts to sign him before the TDL... but I don't really see how he's going to be a fit here.

Thank you NYN...hard pass on Kessel, I don't get even why we'd be entertaining this other than his PO experience which imo is overrated. Did he even get into the line-up with Vegas last year during their run?

Makita - Connor McDavid has 603 ASSISTS in 616 games, that kid is truly a generational player. I hope you're enjoying his greatness?
