The biggest problem with rebuild is that the draft capital acquired via trade wont be at the top of the draft. Teams willing to move picks to obtain rentals or available players draft in the lower half of the draft. Probably the best you can hope for there is a Barzal type player.
Rust, Guentzel, Smith, Petterson, Rakell, all need to go.
Better hope Dubas gets picks in the next DEEP draft year, not just the immediate year... |

I believe I read this is a deep class with the top 20 picks this year all being really good talent. I don't remember where I read it though. |

Should have just let JR do his job. Dubas is a jackass. |

It'd be interesting to at some point get the full story behind JR leaving. All that ever leaked (that I recall) is he wanted to do something and ownership wouldn't let him, probably trading Malkin but I don't think anybody has ever confirmed that have they? |

What a tragedy that would have been. |

You don’t want to be the Buffalo Sabres who more times than not find themselves drafting in the 8-16 range. Real pain is toiling in mediocrity.
They toil in mediocrity, but they've had 4 top 2 overall picks in the past decade. |

I will give dubas a chance at least to see what he can do at the draft? This I believe is the 1st youngest GM in history with the penguins? I'm hoping he has some kind of a different approach compared to the other GM's as they were in win now mode. Dubas will get the wrath of either decision he makes buying or selling by the fans. That includes me also as I would rather rebuild (but that won't be this year) I don't think anyhow? If he does trade guentzel it should be all in with a rebuild I say.
ALso dubas did make some poor decision on the bottom 6 players and definitly graves..He dug himself a grave with that signing. |

JR did do his job. Traded away first round and other draft picks plus young players starting in 2018 for steller players like Reeves, Brassard, Kapanen and Marleua! |

Which just goes to show that even with top 3 picks there's no guarantee a rebuild will be quick at all...which in turn is the main reason why most of us wanted to try and ice a good roster around the big 3 while the are still playing good hockey.

Yeah, JR had some good hits but a lot more misses IMO. What he did to the team after 2017 is wack, got away from what made them good in 2016 & 2017. |

I'm not sure about all of that but Graves to Calgary does make a tiny bit of sense. Would have to think that the Flames want some players back with term left.
What is Hanifan going to want on his upcoming contract, though? |

The number I have seen is in the 7.5 - 8.5 range. Pens would have a solid top 4 for the first time in a while. Sharagovich only makes 3.1 next year, so Pens would probably pay about $11M for both - which is less than they would pay Guentzel + Graves (8 + 4.5 = 12.5 maybe) |

There was nothing in Dubas's press conference yesterday that surprised me. He had a clear intent in the offseason about how to build the team. Some of the assumptions he made didnt work and some of the players he signed hasnt worked out. He tried to put a lot of band aids over the underlining problem and hoped it would work. It didnt happen and at least he seems to be honest about that.
However, the underlining problem is this organization has had a lot of talent drained from it in the last few years and not enough has been done to replenish it. That isnt something that can be easily solved, especially when you as an organization lack the resources and assets to replenish it. |

I would be shocked if Jake only gets 8 per...and if he does he should be a Penguin next season....

I was going on the low side to illustrate this move would be a cost savings to the Pens, otherwise I agree. |

That my good friend is the last decade of the Steelers. Let's get a pick right at the line between playoff and non-playoff teams with no lottery. WEEEE! |

Hard to eat salary for trade like Rust and Rachel so it may decrease the number of partners. For Jake, we can eat it all. He'll get us something good and hopefully not signed to any condition based on him resigning with the Pens.
Note, we could eat Carter's salary and he may want to go to a playoff team. I literally can't think of a team that would have him take up a roster spot even as a healthy scratch. He's not an insurance policy. |

Maybe it's all a scam. Hear me out:
Jake and Dubas already have the extension worked out. But in order to maximize the return, they're both acting like he's not coming back to you drive up his trade price.
Jake gets to take a stab a Cup this year, then comes back to the Pens the first day of free agency and the Pens have some extra assets to try to help them win...more. |

Have you see Nick Deslauriers? I may have spelled his name wrong and don't give a damn, he's not worth me learning how to spell it. I'd take Carter over him all day. |

I don't think that is the case but I don't think trading Jake completely kills the chance of him coming back. I do agree that something with the whole situation feels fishy... they all seem to be acting coy about the whole situation, especially Crosby.
If Jake wants to establish himself as a Pens legend he should allow himself to be traded at the deadline so the Pens to get some high quality assets to spend and re-sign in the summer. |
