7 straight feels nice - Aaron_85
Yeah, it's been a slog of a season. At times, they've seemed like a regressed team, but now that these lines are clicking and we've been able to roll 4 lines most of the time, it seems to be an upgrade over last year.
I still think last year's D core was quite a bit stronger going into the playoffs, but we haven't seen what Tree does this trade deadline.

Bellinger back with cups for 3;years $80m
Meh, don't see why the jays couldn't do that. - Fakepartofme
I think a bunch of teams were nervous about whether he could sustain last year’s performance. He has an opt out after each of the first two years. If he has a big year he can hit free agency again next year.
Very possible.
But it is a far cry from the 200m plus he was supposed to be getting - Fakepartofme
Agree. I love how after years of Boras clients holding out for ridiculous contracts some players/agents are calling it a disgrace to baseball that it is taking so long to sign players like Chapman, Bellinger etc.

Barring an unforseen meltdown or heater, I can't see how Tampa catches the Leafs for the 3rd division spot. At absolute best Tampa is a wildcard team this year.

I think he was interested in Toronto to some degree - I think there was truth to those rumours. I think in the end, Toronto was capped out by Vlad getting an unwarranted and unheard of arbitration ruling in his favour of $20m. If I understand their competitive tax balance situation, they're paying about $2m right now because with all-in, they are about $6m over the $238m threshold.
So they have about $224m in payroll obligations (they are paying $2m this year for this disastrous acquisition of Paul DeJong), but then baseball has other considerations - like Beneftis ($17m) and minor league salaries ($2.25m) which push them over the threshold.
Realistically though, don't resign Kiermaier for $10.5 and don't sign Turner for $13m, and you can have Bellinger.

I checked out the Leafs schedule yesterday. A lot of games left against a lot of teams competing for playoff spots. So far this year seems like one mini slump puts them close to being out of a playoff spot.

Had Vladdy lost the arb he would have still received close to 19 million no? Not sure this affected much

True - Toronto offered him $18.05m and he received $19.9m, so I guess the difference there certainly wasn't a Bellinger! I'm still bitter about how crappy he was last year. I hope this year he's in better shape and ready to play.

Isn’t that good for the Leafs?
I’d be worried if we only had games left against poop teams.

Great cover songs continued. Going off the board this week. Here's a cover song by William Shatner. Decent version of an interesting song from Shatner's Has Been album released in 2004. Give it a try.
