Thanks for the post, Mike.

Question.....can the Elite Prospects inserts that you provide not be presented in a way that shows the current stats, rather than from the start of their careers? I would rather know a player is scoring this year over how he did in 2015-16.

Thanks for the posts!

I wonder if Brodie will be a healthy scratch or will Timmins and Benoit both come out of the line up?

“Floater Willy” is good - it has to happen.
“Zezzie” will be more Leafy in colour
But I got to thinking.
I could do…
“Papi”
“Captain Pajama’s”
“Magic Mitch”
“Pylon”
“LTIR”
“1967”
“The Michigan”
“Overtime”
“Game 7”

It’s endless.

From the last Blog. Slow in reply - I've had a busy day at work!

IDK man...there was a hell of a lot of empty net to shoot at in the years of stand up goaltending, the whole bottom/sides/top blocker were givens back in my day. High glove was the no-no unless you had a fast shot and wanted to show off. But if you wanted to just score pick low inside either post and it was almost guaranteed.

I think a Matthews or McDavid would have blown the doors off of a Gretzky back in the day just on their shot accuracy ability....could they sustain the clutch/grab and getting the poop beat out of them is the only question. Gretzky was a master at evasion.

There was - but for all we talk about how easy it was to score back then, the year Gretzky scored 92, when anyone could score so easily, the second highest goal total was 64 - 28 fewer than Gretzky. That year 10 players scored 50 or more; 3 had 60 or more (including Gretzky).

The next year Gretzky had 71 - 7 players had 50 or more, including Gretzky.

The year following Gretzky had 87 and the second highest had 56; 8 players had 50 or more, including Gretzky.

By 1985-86, Gretzky was less concerned with scoring - and was still only one of 6 to score more than 50 with 52 (this was his famous 215p season).

The reason I mention this crap is because if it was so easy to score more players would have been doing it. Those goalies with all of that net available were giving it to take it away. There was nothing wrong with shooting high glove or high blocker - the sticks were slightly less accurate in tight because of the difficulty in getting the same flex - but ultimately the scoring in the league was higher, but the stars were not absolutely blowing up the league with goals.

Gretzky changed the game. They moved the nets out because of him - think about that! They changed the ice surface to limit the ability of _one_ player. They were hoping more players would be able to generate offense like Gretzky with more room. Naturally, like the NHL, it didn't work - and it actually decreased scoring because the D was able to check forwards better with more space to operate and forwards weren't as tight to the net.

What the heck is going on with Bert?!? They made it sound like he was being benched early last game, but Keefe thanked him by name for battling to play and there was Domi's comments too. Is he still battling the flu?

Gretzky was amazing, no doubt at all...especially in the era of clutch and grab. Matthews can dry up when things get tight and grabby in the playoffs. So there are some points to be made for sure.

And ya, the net change thing was amazing and you are exactly correct in that the league didn't take into consideration more room for the D man to chase behind the net.

I guess the argument is always going to be opinion based and subjective. More talent top to bottom in the line ups now. Physically hockey players are trained so much better and much more healthy. Equipment is soooo much better. There are more teams and more of a talent pool to pick from; just a lot of differences in general.

But if time travel is ever invented, I want Matthews and McDavid playing a season against the Great One. I want Muhammad Ali to have a 15 round bout against Tyson. I want the Kobe Lakers against the Jordan Bulls to have 7 game playoff round and then winner plays the Bird Celtics. The list goes on.
