I'm no fan of Holland at all. Never should have been hired to make personnel decisions again after his many poor years in Detroit. But it's too early to know if he failed this season yet. They could still easily have a long post season which would be a success.

Top 3 is impossible if you make playoffs you can’t gain that many spots without trading for it

I believe he means Anaheim’s pick will be a top 3.

Holland won four SCs as the DET GM. The relevant fact would be only one of which occurred in the cap era (2008) and that was fifteen seasons ago when the core was long built before the cap existed. Should EDM bring back Glen Sather? Holland was consistently one of the worst GMs in his last five years in DET.

Ah my bad. Regardless of the cap era still impressive. Even Rutherford was dumbed down his last while in PIT. Seems to be doing ok in Van so far training Allvin. Holland has done fine as the Oilers GM so far was left a pretty big mess. Like most GM's do for the next GM's coming in lol.

It's not the equivalent though. He was amazing at scouting European prospects, but that isn't a competitive advantage anymore. And not working within the constraint of a salary cap- especially when DET outspent all teams by a wide margin in some of those years- doesn't demonstrate he is a great GM any longer. I do think he's been around average overall in EDM, but nothing special. And if EDM does not do well this postseason, I expect Holland to not be brought back.
Rutherford was AMAZING for a two year period in 2015-2017. He was very ordinary before and after that in Pittsburgh.

Holland won 3 as GM of the Wings not 4. Jimmy Devellano and Scotty Bowman won the one in 1997 and they basically built the core of that team to go on to win 3 cups. Holland did bring in some hall of fame vets like Hull, Chelios, Hasek, Robitaille, Larionov, Murphy ect... although a lot of them just wanted to sign or be traded to Detroit for a chance to win.

Holland was complete garbage for a long while before he left. Nobody is sad he isn't the Wings GM anymore and they should have moved him up and given the team to Jim Nill or Yzerman long before they forced him to. He left the Wings a dumpster fire that took Yzerman years to clean up. Wings still have the buyout cap hit for Abdelkader for another 2 more years thanks to Holland.
