That Jake soundbite is causing a stir. What's he gonna say? He wanted out?

As for the contract talks wasn't it his side that didn't want to negotiate during the year?

It probably started and ended with term. Dubas didn't want to have another 30+ player on a long term no movement deal. I can understand that.

It was never Dubas’s decision. Jake didn’t want to stay in Pittsburgh.

I can't blame either of them.

Jake deserves a raise and and I think not giving out his sunset meal ticket contract was the right move by Dubas.

Grinder, I would also rather see Sid in the playoffs, but that isn't going to happen, so I'm going to enjoy the milestones.

Someone said here before a real good take, Jake isn't old enough to get his retirement deal like the other 3. He also isn't young enough to really usher in a new era and have a long term deal.

Pretty sure the contract talks stuff was only with the teams he was going to be traded to.

That's pretty much it. I missed this earlier, thank you.

From the Pens/Dubas perspective, if Jake wants (and deserves) a 8 year 80-90 million dollar contract there isn't much to discuss

Penguins have a 2-3 year MAXIMUM window, (not for Cups, we're talking playoff pushes) and a huge depth problem.

The best way to rebuild is to weaponize cap space, finish in the bottom 5 and move out players with any value in the last year or 2 of their contracts

Having a guy like Jake on a long term, big money deal with probably a NMC isn't a way to accomplish this. Bunting alone will replace 60% of Jakes production at 40% of the cost - Gives them 6-7 million in savings to round out the rest of the roster. And they got some other pieces that may or may not contribute on the cheap

If Jake would have taken 5 year 40 Million I am 100% sure that he stays - We'll see what he signs for in the offseason and then we'll know

Maybe so. Lots of assumptions form all sides on what happened. I was asking more than stating.

IMO Both Jake and Dubas were both right to choose the way they did.

Yeah for sure, I'm not really mad -- would have preferred watching Sid and Jake play together over trading him but it's whatever.

I’d rather see the coach fired. And use the rest of this year to start building towards the return.

Agreed.

If Sid does succeed this year in tying Gretz's record of 19 straight PPG seasons, next year will be a real test for him to break it with the lines as they're currently constructed.

Can't have a 2-3 tweeners on the first line next year.

Sid is only 7 assists away from 1,000 - I'm looking forward to that milestone. He'll be the 14th all-time to accomplish that!

He'll pass Ray Bourque soon in all-time points, Phil Esposito after that. Hard not to have fun seeing these things take place as a life long fan.

We should all just enjoy the show! Only a handful of team get to watch their players at this level, Pens fans have had so many!!

Plus it's just such a throwaway statement after the fact "I wanted to stay "

Whats he supposed to say?

"Well, I was willing to stay if they paid me enough money, lets be real, it's gonna be tough for the better part of the next decade so if I wasn't gonna be paid stupid money, I'm glad that I can at least win now and pick the best situation for my next contract"

Yeah this is what always seemed reasonable to me about Dubas's decision even if I don't agree with it.

Malkin has 2 years left, Karlsson 3, Letang, Rust, Rackell, and Jarry all have four. Only player signed beyond that is Graves for one more year (ugh). So not giving Jake a contract four years after most of your books are cleared off makes sense.

Just wish Jake wasn't the guy they drew that line with. He should still be a prime producer for the next four. Be curious how they approach UFAs and even Petterson if that's a line they want to draw, because it will be tough to build the whole team on shorter term contracts.

What Jake is saying there, what Dubas said, and what reporters are saying all seem to line up pretty well. I don't think this needs to be an issue.

Sigh. Now that the team is real bad, you're going to be here more often, aren't you?
