After the mayor of Scottsdale called them "Rookie land developers" the writing of the wall went up.
Circle Arpil 18th on your calendar as the last day for the Arizonia Coyotes, that is if Frank is right....

It sure would be nice - and better for the league - if that team had a halfway competent ownership.

Reminds me of John Spano or Charles Wang with the Islanders.

The Phoenix metro area is 4x the size of Salt Lake City metro. It's not like Utah is renowned for their hockey fandom or hockey talent. Plus Utah already has an NBA team that they would have to compete with. Doesn't make much sense to me. I get the desire to get out of Phoenix, but I don't think the answer is Salt Lake City.

I don't follow what is the next best city for an NHL franchise too much, guess I hear Atlanta, Houston and Salt Lake maybe Quebec. What is the best city for an NHL franchise?

Kansas City. Team stays in the central. Better travel. Would hawks fans drive down to KC? I know blues fans would. KC had a rink at one point. Not sure how out of date it is.

Salt Lake keeps the franchise in the southwest. And I don't think they could do worse than Arizona has.

"Kansas City. Team stays in the central. Better travel. Would hawks fans drive down to KC? I know blues fans would. KC had a rink at one point. Not sure how out of date it is. "

Not a chance .... their rink is actually the stadium downtown - which was sold to KC residents (in a tax referendum not quite 20 years ago), which effectively retired Kemper Arena. It was 'promised' at the time that they'd bring in an anchor tenant, maybe an NBA or NHL team -it turned out to be indoor football and indoor soccer... really they were only interested in getting NCAA basketball -as well as tournament games ... not to mention the occasional residency of Garth Brooks. The other reason put out there for ditching Kemper -aside from basically redeveloping downtwon -was about the luxury boxes available at Kemper- they wanted more.

Kemper wasn't really too bad of a place to actually watch hockey - there were no bad sight lines (given that they place was never more than half full - its fullest was when they had a promo with several soap opera stars there- so about half the crowd was not there for hockey. Kemper sat about 18-20,000-ish. I got to roam around there and sit all over the place - preferred in the upper deck right behind the net (I had had seats right on the glass right behind the visitor's net in the 1st and 3rd about 4 seats to the right of the goal judge). But pretty much hung out wherever I felt like there ... ran into Tony O there once -in Tampa's first year -or rather I walked by him -- high pitched voice -you couldn't miss it. I left him alone -and didn't say anything to him --he was there doing a job. Maybe I shoulda gotten his autograph... or said hi...but I didn't.

It was used as a bargaining chip for several franchises to get a better deal in their own areas (notably Pittsburgh, and Nashville) - but it wasn't ever serious I don't think - because that city regularly proves they would never be able to support an NHL franchise as anything more than the occasional pre-season game. If I recall correctly the last time they even did that they moved it to a rink in Independence where some whaleshyte teams play (I think there have been several there since the Blades folded when the IHL merged with the AHL) - that are technically pro- but they make playing in the ECHL aspirational -nevermind the AHL.

Fwiw - the Independence stadium (I think) only seats 5,000 -and I actually think I played in a rec league in Sydney that seated about that many.

Even the league probably knows by now that moving to KC would amount to a similar scenario as they currently have now. Just a band-aid and hoping for the best - it would be an insult to a place like Quebec.

Fwiw I lived in KC for 16 years.. doubt anything has changed that much apart from they weren't even interested in rubber stamping another tax referendum to give the Chiefs/Royals money to support downtown stadiums.

Bettman was keeping the team there for the right reason. Unfortunately there wasn’t a sufficient fan base there for the NHL to get their TV Network deal.

Alright. I said KC purely out of selfish reasons. A reason to take a cross state trip and get out of St. Louis for a day or two ha ha. I wanted to go to independence but not paying full price for a bunch of minor leaguers.

Not sure if Utah would work. Bettman wants to stay in the southwest for some odd reason. Why not move the team to New Mexico ha ha.

Would Bettman allow the move to Utah? They have a group interested and the owners would get the Expansion money. Seems like a new team would go to Utah. That way they can make a mockery of the game like they did with vegas

Another update from Seravalli about Arizona to SLC.

UPDATE [3:02 p.m. ET]: Sources tell Daily Faceoff that the NHL, Arizona Coyotes and Smith Entertainment Group have made significant and meaningful progress on an agreement that would see the Coyotes franchise sold and relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah. The machinations of the potential deal, which would have a renamed and rebranded franchise playing in Salt Lake in October, are mentioned below in the original story from Wednesday morning. The NHL sent an update memo to the Board of Governors on Wednesday amid media speculation. Sources said Coyotes players have been informed a “verbal” agreement is in place, but we have received pushback on that characterization of talks. To date, no deal has been completed. There is much work to be done, and it’s complicated and will involve many layers and lawyers. Stay tuned.

I read an article in today's Wall Street Journal about St.Louis' downtown going to pot. Maybe the Blues will relocate to KC.

Shut up. McCovey is off the table!!! Blues aren’t going anywhere. Stillman will keep the Blues here. Hell. The alumni would purchase the team before it was sold to another market I think. St. Louis is going to poop. One the housing market improves I am selling and never looking back. Not going to purchase with rates this high. Junkies and homeless all over the place. A few years back came back from the Appalachians and came back to people passed out on the corner. Drug induced or dead. Didn’t care which. Just drove right on by. Finding bodies laying in the street happens at least once a month around here.

This may be some insight into the financials if true. Bettman making some coin for the owners. I mean, that is his primary job.

I think you also have to look at the ownership. The owner of the Whalers cried poor, bailed and moved to Raleigh and nothing really changed. He finally quit crying, sold and the new owner has iced a competitive, winning team in the same environment the previous owner couldn't.

Yeah. Coyotes might be in that situation. They have had numerous owners though. Back when they first moved there they had a good team. Then Selanne and Tkachuk left. Then………..

They lost the arena due to non payment of taxes?? Thought the guy just bought them and now he is already trying to sell again?
I honestly don’t follow much news about them because I don’t care. It’s always just seemed a mess

Yeah. I forgot about the tax thing.

Anyway, enough is enough. Move the team. If SLC can accommodate them and have them playing in a big boy arena this fall give it a shot.

It can't be any worse of a situation then they're in now.

I'm near the front of the line of those who are impressed with Reichel's talent and have been since I saw his first shift an 18 yr old playing German pro. I guess all rookies can be a but of a riddle but Reichel takes that a step further for me.

Probably unfair since he's just 21 with 35 NHL games. But with 120 AHL games, 80 German pro games, his showing in the Bigs late last yr and his excellent talent skating I expected a player this yr. ........ Like anyone, if he keeps his nose over the puck he's more successful. Who knows which Reichel we get tonight but it's always interesting when a guy lines up with Bedard.

With Mrazak in goal and Reichel to L1 could be an interesting tilt.

Good Fricken bye to the Yotes, about time. Now the cap should go up even more with that drag on revenues going away.
