Sure looks grim in terms of securing a playoff spot. I have no faith they can win out and even less faith they will get the help they need from other teams.

Talk about crash and burn at the end of a season. They weren’t able to keep the tank full long enough.

I'll be watching the NCAA Frozen 4 tonight instead of watching the Flyers take an absolute beating from the Rags.

Any word on who is coaching the Flyers tonight? Torts has a history of bailing on the team after it is out of the playoffs (and getting praised for it by the brass).

His reasoning from last year when he sat in the press box instead of behind the bench:

“I think I have (a) responsibility to my coaching staff, (to) help them develop,” he explained on Saturday morning. “I think we’re all trying to develop, just like the players are, I think, in these type of situations.”

Can you imagine any other coach sitting in the pressbox for multiple games and getting away with it?

I don’t have as much of a problem with the coach watching from the suite as some here.
The question I have is what do you really gain from it.
If it was the middle of the season and you want an in game view of how the team is playing then whatever ok.
Tortorella already knows he can’t do anything now to fix what’s going on. My guess is that he wants to evaluate some players in game.
How he can’t do that on video afterwards I do not know.

The Flyers keep digging their own grave.

Atkinson is obviously cooked. Another season at nearly $6M for a player splitting time in the popcorn suite with limited minutes and very little production.

Couturier: $7.5M for the next 6 years for a 3rd line center who can only manage 35-50 points a year. The Flyers will most likely have to eat that deal.

Laughton should have been traded. His value was at its highest during the TDL. That's 2 more years of $3M for a player that received way too much ice time IMO this year (he's more effective as a 3rd line winger with some decent PK skills).

Who here believes the Flyers won't waste a ton of money in July signing a 30+ y/o borderline all-star entering / trending towards the sunset of their career to a bloated lengthy contract?

Tortorella part of the front office? That's nightmare fuel right there.

Only 3 more years of $6.25M for Ellis
Only 2 more years of $3.57M for Hayes
Only 1 more year of $1.7M for DeAngelo

On a positive note the Flyers buyouts have ended for:

I want to have hope for Briere as GM, but some of the things he says make me very concerned. He outright stated he wouldn't trade Laughton for fair value because he has a bond from playing with him (even though it was only 5 games!), and because his intangibles have no price. That is a bad approach for an alleged rebuild.

Just. Wow. And he even signed it as the city thanking them for their service.

I liked the part where Gauthier single handedly derailed their rebuilding plans. No point in rebuilding now.

Torts was never the right coach for the Flyers IMO based on where they are as a team and in their "rebuilding" process.

Torts skillset at this point in his career could be useful as an injection interim coach after a firing to whip the lads into shape—similar to what happened with Berube and the St. Louis Blues. A struggling team who coalesced after firing Yeo and elevating Berube to bench boss. They went on a legendary run and won the cup. People are tired of the ego, antics, love of grinders (they're important but not THAT important), and frankly outdated approach to the game. Not addressing the power play all season long after it was league worst last season as well says everything you need to know.

He said he's "developing" Shaw and Rocky.

Basically he's seeing which one has the goods for when he moves upstairs.

Rocky must have the "goods" on Torts to still be employed after running the league's worst PP for the second season in a row.

I remember that interview/clip. It was a classic spin on his fail to move a player who actually had value at the TDL. Most definitely could have netted perhaps a 2nd and 4th pick right there.

He developed him into the best at running the league's most consistently inept power play!

There are two categories of players to be moved. One category is good players who should be moved due to being assets who can get future assets and are older. That is Konecny and Laughton. Hathaway to a lesser degree but more of a deadline situation.
The other category is players who just aren't a fit. That's Atkinson, Deslauriers and Ristolainen.
As for the rest. Always need to be open to hockey trades but should be brought back.

- MJL

Agreed.

I put Farabee, Brink and Frost in the category of “bring them back but listen for hockey trades”

I think it’s possible Tippett is a big proponent of Frost and that a potential camaraderie could keep Frost safe.

Brink is fine but he looks like a puff pastry.

Farabee might be over it.

It’s possible he wants to see the players’ game and how they conduct themselves when he’s not right there waiting for them on the bench. Body language and all.

Like watching your kid on a nanny cam when you’re gone and they think they’re alone lol

That's some world class accountability right there, 2 years running. No wonder the Flyers are a lock to make a deep playoff run.
