Go hard on gold. When everything falls apart, gold goes through the roof. Between the US bubble and this pandemic, it's going to go sky high. 25% return in this past year alone. I suspect Bitcoin is going to spike too but that's always a gamble because most people don't understand it so they never feel confident in it and the market is built on confidence. - JohnFergusonJr

Yeah, my parents are 85 and 83. Mom is near the end. I'm going to have dinner with them tomorrow night, but will avoid my wife, who comes home from a business trip tomorrow. The welcome home hugs and kisses can wait until after I see my parents. - Atomic Wedgie
That's fantastic that you are doing that... I was thinking today how I would never get over it if I infected one them in a situation when I KNEW there was a risk. |

Where was she? - Canada Cup
A little place in China called Wuhan.
Calgary. I can't wait to hear stories - she booked her ticket late last week, just as the oil sector was imploding. She's having dinner tonight with her university bff, who is in the oil industry. I suspect there will be heavy drinking.

There are two types of people who buy Bitcoin:
Those who do not understand that currency must be backed by something of intrinsic value; and
Those who realize they can make money off of the first group.
Some people get very rich from Ponzi schemes. Doesn't mean it's actually something of value. |

In the name of fairness, yes. Maybe 5 games is too much, maybe a 3 game series. But something to give teams a chance to qualify as opposed to just cutting it off. Again, imagine if the Leafs were 1 point out, how would you feel?
Considering the whole league is getting a bye-month, the rest might be a factor but it might not be. We've seen teams on long rest lose their 1st game back because they were off for too long. So it could be an advantage or it might not be.
For these bubble teams, just making the playoffs and making up games is worth it financially for them. And for the fans of those teams too. - JohnFergusonJr
Good thing Detroit is so much worse than everyone else, or they might need to hold a loser tournament between the worst teams to see who gets last overall and the best lottery odds. Which ever team loses the most, followed by the next, etc.
I mean, it's only fair, right? Maybe the other teams that are close together can fight it out to lose and get 2nd last? |

Since money was taken off the gold standard, which major currency is backed by anything of intrinsic value?
Every major currency's solution to a crisis? Print more money.
Just bringing up "Ponzi scheme" tells me you don't understand what Bitcoin (cryptocurrency) really is and more importantly, what it could become. |

Long term impact of this covid-19 pandemic could be that in a lot of (at least European countries) governments will fall due to their late and lackluster measures - and more conservative parties will form new governments. - MaximusAurelius

He's right. It is worth something, because people decide it's worth something, which is all about confidence. Hell, you can say the same about most currency, although most are a bit more secure since they're built on things like belief in the government and the government's ability to tax the poop out of people. |

I think there's major, major, major questions about crypto, don't get me wrong. The idea of blockchain tech is intriguing, but who knows. But just saying, regular currency isn't backed by anything with intrinsic value either. The social contract, the power of the state, debt, yes, but just to be a Richard, there's no intrinsic value backing it.
The decentralized nature of crypto is so intriguing, but I don't know. |

Currency is backed by the assets of the government issuing it. Printing more money devalues a currency.
I know more about this than you could ever hope to learn, son.
I do like Blockchain, however. |

I'm intrigued by it. I bought and sold some. But I stopped keeping up on the developments. I didn't understand the forking issues. The energy consumption seems a problem. But the idea of bypassing central banks and banks altogether is very tantalizing. It's interesting. |
