A buddy asked me last night if I wanted to go to the Jan 5th Avalanche game, I just laughed.

The problem is that other teams are also stinking, so they are only a few points out. If you ignore their play, this season and last, and the year before that, and the year before that, then you have to think there is still a chance to turn things around.
