Coaches really don't seem to tank. GM's alter the roasters to counter the coaches efforts to win. Keep in mind that a coaches personal record, future contracts, and desire to win usually trump the GM's desire to tank. - boonerbuck
yeah players and coaches play to win but Tochett also knows this year is to see what they have and trim the fat. This is his most important part of his job description. Tear it down and see who fits under the new style.
I am glad there is so far no Tochett Rocket like we had with the Bruce Bump.
I don't care for Tochett as a coach but I am glad he knows he is an Axeman.

To be fair Bear is the best RHD on the team - NorthNuck
And that explains why we are bottom five.
Sad state. That said continue the tank and sell.

bear is a passable 4th defender. If he is your 5th defender you are a contending team in today's NHL. |

His advanced stats seem to think otherwise. Again, as a 3rd pairing #5 nobody would complain about him. He is forced to be our #3 dman and that is above his capabilities. |

First of all, he is on top pairing.
Troy Stecher Ben Hutton Ethan Bear all the same just different numbers on the back of the jersey. Still a crap D. |

Even worse. If our defense was good enough that he was playing 15 or less a game, you wouldn't be complaining about him like you do now. There is not a single defender in todays NHL, nor is there one that has ever and will ever play that doesn't make mistakes in pretty well every game they play that doesn't require a goalie or teammate to bail them out of. Bears would be less glaring if he played less minutes. |

I have probably made about five comments in my lifetime about Bear so complaining about him is a little bit misleading.
Bear is a fringe NHL player and Canucks D sucks. Not a lot more needs to be said and nothing you post will convince me otherwise.

This is where we really disagree. Eye test and advanced stats show that he is a legit NHL Defender. He is just more suited to be a #5 3rd pairing defender. Not a top 4 or top 2 guy. Chatfield was able to take advantage of a long Covid Recovery and Bear was unable to earn his spot back. Can often happen when you miss a lot of time and your replacement fits in well with the system. |

I don't see Simashev on that list.
I'm sick of not having organizational depth at D on this squad. They normally take the longest to develop and it is the hardest position to learn (outside of G). So draft them now, then add the centers and leave the wingers off the board, (Unless it is a generational Ovi type)
So going full RosterHawk trade down scenario. Unless we are top 3 and can get Bedard, Fantilli or Carlsson, trade down and acquire additional picks.
Draft Reinbacher, Simashev, and if you get a later 1st for the trade downs or by trading away roster players, grab Dragicevic.
Would this not be considered a huge draft day win if they did this?
If you can do this all in one draft year, you have begun to solve the perpetual weakness of this team since 1970. Now is the time to build that base to have depth at the most important position.
(frank) BPA 5'10" wingers in the 1st round. - carsonagenic

Like I said, if top 3 of Bedard, Fantilli and Carlsson are gone, draft and start to fix the absolute black hole of D depth in the 1st round. They can add 2 top d prospects and possibly 3 if they can get another late 1st. Add to it in the 2nd and later rounds to begin to build a solid team base to eventually add the high skilled wingers to. - carsonagenic
If they're going all D, try and trade the number 4/5 pick for 2x 1sts, one later in the draft, possibly a second one on this draft.
Ottawa has multiple picks, don't they? |

Yeah I mean I posted his War card earlier, but he's got a rating over 80% when rated as a 3rd pairing guy, which would likely translate to being an average to slightly above average 2nd pairing guy. He shouldn't be on the top pair, but I don't think we need to worry about that as clearly he is not the best partner for Hughes. |

You couldn't be more off base with that. He is clearly a cut above the Stechers, Huttons, etc.

OK yes he belongs in the NHL . He is a bad NHL player. Are we happy now? Same sh1t we all went through with superstars Ben Hutton and Troy Stecher.
Check the stats of the three of them before you say he is a cut above. |

He's literally not though, he has been good pretty much everywhere he's played. Barring Carolina because there were a lot of factors that went into him not playing as much there this year.
I think you're the one with a skewed viewpoint. Just because the team is bad doesn't mean every single player on it is therefore bad. |

The Canucks need better defenders than Bear still though. Two Makar's to be exact. |

Their last three games they have been scored upon over fifteen times and they are trending towards the bottom. Yes my viewpoint is very skewed.

Below average defense with way below average goaltending is usually a recipe to get scored on a ton. |
