Your fantasy of how prospects turn out is truly amazing. - manvanfan
Not at all. Lots of them fail, which means you need more of them to get good ones.

I'm not saying it's where the canucks are currently but I think it's often overlooked by fans how both Colorado and TB bottomed out with their "superstar" cores before winning.
Fans compare their own team, be it the canucks/leafs/whomever, to these cup winnings forgetting the path they took to become champs. Colorado were annual playoff busts (1st round outs or missing) for most of MacKinnon's tenure prior to winning. (after totally bottoming out a season and ending up with Makar.) - Aaron_85
I wouldn't say the Canucks are in the exact same place because all teams are different. Scenario's aren't all that unfamiliar though. The Canucks probably look more like Colorado did at that stage minus the playoffs wins but in the fact that they have to make more hockey trades than TB did.
Colorado made acquisitions of Burakovsky, Nichuskin. Trade for Kadri. It doesn't look like Vancouver is going to add a Makar at this draft though. |

True, but usually those teams get exposed at some point during the run, or lose in the final. Then they spend like mad thinking they are "just right there, look we made the final!" Then come apart completely...ala Montreal, Ottawa, Canucks in 82', etc.
While I of course want to win a Cup, I would prefer a solid team ready to win year after year. I think this is a more tried and tested method - carsonagenic

Last two teams to draft 3 times in the first round.
Rangers. 18. Kratsov, Miller, Lundkvist.
Devils 20. Holtz, Mercer, Mulkhahdlin <-butchered.
Pretty well only 1 out of the 3 are helping those teams right now. Rumour that Kratsov and Holtz could be moved also.
Both teams have had to go out and make trades or sign free agents to recover the NHL talent they traded away for those picks.
It's not all that fine of line. |

Way longer than 2 years to lipstick this pig. Hence why, imo, resigning Kuz and Miller was the wrong move. - carsonagenic
I think they can be competitive in 2 years. That OEL contract will still be an anchor but after that the buyout is easier. They should have some players coming up to play on ELCs and some cap space to add some FA depth.
Of course trading some players away could expedite the process and put us in a far better position for 2025-26. |

I know the last time we spent a 1st round pick on a D from the London Knights it didn't go well but I really like this Oliver Bonk kid. |

I never said go all in. - manvanfan
The only reason to buy out OEL this summer is if we needed the cap to go all in. We're not there yet so why carry a cap penalty for 8 years when we can wait a couple and carry a much smaller penalty for a much shorter term. |

He has been impressive. What he looks like is a guy who is "going to play". Probably not a guy who leads the pair but compliments it really well. |

RHD, ascending talent that makes good decisions.
He's the type of guy I'd target with our 2nd 1st round pick. |

The only reason to buy out OEL this summer would be cap space to be able to build for the future. Whether that be sign a RHD to pair with someone for the future. To be able to take on a bad contract for picks or prospects. To not have him play. |

Probably time to even target a player like that a little higher than expected also.
Similar to K. Andre Miller. was viewed as a 2nd rounder and kept rising. Looks like solid value where they picked him now. |

We'd only save 3m cap for the next 2 seasons of we buy out OEL this year. There are no top pairing or even top 4 rhd that we could get for that saving. We don't have the cap to spend more, it's already allocated.

I'm not sure where they have him ranked but I assume around 20th or later? I mean if we're picking 15-20 with the Islanders pick and he's there I'd grab him.
His hockey sense seems to be really high. |

More later in most so far. If you are 15th and figure you could get him still at 20. Then trade down. Just option right.
Not a lot of knocks on his game other than his limited offence so far. Who cares when you have a top 9 like the Canucks do. |

It isn't like a 1 in 1 out hockey trade. Cap is fluid. Myers is up the year after. |

Elliotte on Miller: At the very least people (teams) are going to ask the Canucks "what are you willing to do here if anything?". So we're going to find out the answer.

Yeah I'd trade down for him but not too far or else you could miss out on him. I'm not too concerned about the offence as this is as he doesn't have too much OHL experience prior to this season.
I think he could use 3 years of developing after his draft season though. |

2018 draft class is pretty well the only developed class now. 14 guys that have played over 30 games this season.
2019 has 3.
2020 has 3.
2021 has 2.
About 20 defenders per draft make it. That's from first pair to fringe guys. |

So the 3 years of development seems about right.
I've looked through the rankings a bit since and I've seen him as low as 42. I highly doubt he makes it out of the first round.
I do think we could trade down though and pick up another top 60 pick. Drafting 3 Dmen with those picks could go a long ways to having a homegrown D in 5 years. |
