The approach & outlook to take is Mgmt is addressing the D. Plenty more yet to do. Sure it’s open to debate but they said what their intentions were. They’ve been upfront even admitting when wrong. Doesn’t matter that fans wanted a rebuild it was never going to happen. So here we are forging forth & can only support the course of action. We can be critical along the way as time goes by. Gotta put our hopes on the core & they gotta prove to everyone it’s the right choice & end the days of constantly disappointing a passionate fanbase. They have to win us all over from the top down to the bottom including Abby.

Ok my state of the union speech is over hit me with your best shot but refrain from old regime history lessons. We said & heard them all.

Now boys win one for the Gipper

I can fathom trading the Islander's 1st fora RHD.... but throwing in this years 2nd just seems so Benning. Why the 2nd? If Detroit really needed a 2nd, as we've seen with so many trades this year, why not make it a 2025 2nd or something. Just so dumbfounding.

Because Detroit knows they're going to get 2 good D prospects with those picks.

There’s little doubt that Hronek will help improve the right side of the Canucks’ defence, but giving up a first-round pick, one that would have likely brought a much younger blueliner into the fold, is a hefty price. Several league sources were very confused by the trade, especially since the Canucks seemed to be so set on adding picks for this year’s draft, which is considered a deep draft.

“In giving up the draft pick, they traded a decade of cost control of an elite young player for one year of Hronek at $4.4 million and one to two years at $6.5 million during a rebuild,” former Florida Panthers assistant general manager Steve Werier told Postmedia.

Wasn't Allvin really insistent on getting the highest-possible draft pick in the Horvat trade? He turned down other offers in lieu of a better draft pick. Why go and trade that away?!

Ya. And knowing how well Yzerman has been rebuilding that team, I assume in 5 years we'll look back and it'll be an even more lopsided trade.

This feels like all the Benning trades again... why were we all born in Vancouver? lol

I rather look at it as Hronek was a 2nd rounder before Yzerman that panned out & has 4 years of NHL experience. He’s moving to a team that has better F’s overall & a good goalie. He should be excited. He’s trending up & gives us more offense from the back end & big help on our weakest problem the break outs & PK. Playing in an easier division & can be a big part of helping taking the team to the next step. The Atlantic division is loaded with good teams meaning winning was going to be harder for many years. He’ll have to prove he was worth the price & you can bet the local media will let him know it.

The more minutes he can take away from Myers the better. About time.

Interesting thought from Drance on the trade, which just continues Canucks management's lack of vision:

When the Canucks dealt Horvat, after all, they effectively purchased a short position against the Islanders. It was savvy business.

The Islanders’ pick is most likely to fall in the teens for the 2023 NHL Draft year, which is valuable, but it could convey unprotected to the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. That prospect makes this particular asset one with the potential to change the trajectory of the Canucks franchise, in the unlikely event that the Islanders sag this season and fall flat the next.

The Islanders have trended up over the past week, but that Vancouver parted with this asset unconditionally makes this a reckless bet.

Why wouldn’t Canucks management have at least preserved the right to determine which pick they surrender in 2024, in the event that the Islanders’ conditional pick conveys?

What if both the Islanders and the Canucks struggle next season, both picks fall in the top 11 and it’s the Islanders’ bid that wins the draft lottery? It’s a nightmare scenario and one the Canucks should’ve protected themselves against.

It’s not as if the Hronek deal — and Hronek netted the Red Wings only a 2026 second-round pick less than the Arizona Coyotes acquired for a bona fide star-level defender in Jakob Chychrun on Wednesday — would’ve fallen apart if Vancouver had insisted on prudently managing that risk.

Alas, it seems that Canucks hockey operations didn’t weigh this particular risk.

Small chance to be sure that that happens, but why not just cover yourself in a worst-case scenario?

Alas it seems Drance didn’t weigh Chychrun’s injury history nor the risk he might not resign when UFA 2025.

Hronek will be a RFA & cheaper & not as likely to bolt like Americans.
Also a RHD not LHD.

Talking heads don’t say everything.

If it was the point, he would have wrote more about all details. As well, it seems to be every single other talking head's notion that the Canucks overpaid and the Sens underpaid – the skill level gap is larger than a future second. Hronek has never played a full season, Sens can trade him on his final year if he's not going to re-sign, Hronek needs a new contract after next year and will be getting a raise... seems like you're omitting all details as well.

The Boston Bruins have signed F David Pastrnak to an eight-year, $90 million contract extension.

Pasta re-signs, and the Bruins trade for Bert. They're going to be a tough out for anyone, though I would love to see them get swept in the first round.

We just knew at some point they were going to make moves to try and prop up the team for Pettersson and Hughes in the immediate future. Whether we like it or not, this franchise has been doing this for 20 years, like many other franchises they just won’t commit to a full rebuild…sadly.

This move kinda reminds me of the trade for JT Miller. Trading a first round pick in the 14-20 range for immediate helps. That didn’t work out so well either.
