If you look at two of the hotter goalies this year, Gustavsson in Minnesota and Ullmark in Boston, both were had for either free (free agent Ullmark), or reasonable price (cap dump in Talbot). If we were to lose Helle, it's not to say the team will never compete again. - Jetlag
Not on the same level but Samsonov was free, Vanecek 3rd plus a 2nd round switch, Georgiev for 2 3rds and a 5th
There is opportunity everywhere the Jets just have to be looking

Just a note on PLD last night. He was absolutely terrible. Lost most puck battles, made bad plays, bad passes, no shots on net, no hits, no dangerous chances. He did not get involved in anything rough at all. Literally did nothing right. He is obviously still hurting and it showed. Still we expect a lot lot more from PLD than his game against the Sharks. Last night we were better to have someone else in the lineup than him.
I wasn't too far off on PLD. Has not skated in past few practices or optional skates. Not sure if he is even dressed tonight. We shall see in a few minutes. - jetsnation
EDIT : No PLD tonight |

Talbot wasn't a cap dump, Ottawa paid Gustavsson for him, Idk wtf Dorian was thinking with that one, great trade for Minnesota. |

Kuemper has the numbers over the past 5 years just not the health or he would be in the conversation as a top goalie.
I guess we will see. If the Jets were smart they would realize that making a 31 year old goaltender one of the highest paid is not an optimal use of their cap space and trade him, whatever the return is. - BWJumper
same goes for Sheif at his age. This team is so ridiculously stagnant and has run its course.
this summer trade all of Shief, Helle, Wheels, PLD, and a couple D. time to blow it up!!!!
next deadline trade Lowry and Dillon, Teams tend to overvalue toughness at the deadline compared to in the summer.
but this team and city needs a fresh start. Chipman blew it, he hung on to his buddy GM and Buddy coach for toooooooo longggggggg and he himself is wayyyyyy to invoved in the on ice product |

You're exactly right and that's Chevys biggest problem as a GM, he's not looking often enough to improve this team. |

I have no problem with Helle, but a 8 year deal at 10 per, kinda makes me sick (at his age). - Jetlag
Yeah I see it the same way, great goalie but he'll be 31 when he signs his next contract and at the very least he'll want at least 5×$8.25M, I know goalies tend to age well but who knows, not sure its worth the risk considering it'll take two to three years to retool the lineup anyway. |

What's bizarre to me is that in 12 years I think he's traded 1 prospect (Erik Foley) in an effort to improve the team.

Their goalie was better than our goalie. Once again MAF does it to Wpg. |

4 pts up on Calgary now for the last wild card spot, lol, with the same amount of games played at 65. 17 to go. Wpgs last 20 games are 7-11-2, Calgarys last 20 is 8-8-4
The latest play of Wpg goaltending suggests Calgary has a shot at making the playoffs!! |

What's even more bizarre is that Chevelallseasonoff still has a job. I always wonder why I never hear his name as a potential new GM for another franchise. You would think with him being this great hockey mind that he would find it demeaning to be micromanaged by Chipman.

First the good things: The Jets have put in max effort in the past three games including the Wild. Unfortunately, they ran into two hot goalies against SJ, and Minny at the PP was not working. They could have easily won both games if not for awesome goaltending vs avg goaltending from Helle.
The latest problem is the PP . I mentioned earlier in the season the one thing Bowness cleaned up was getting the Jets back to the modern age of the high cycle with the third guy rotating in with the defensmen. Its something Maurice never picked up on ( and still hasn't) . Most teams in the league now use it.
The same thing goes for the PP . We had two games against the Oilers, and hopefully everyone noticed how either McD (or Draisatl on R) rotates up high from his position halfway up the boards on the left side and does an arc outside the blueline, builds speed back on the way in to receive a pass. That speed is usually enough to either beat the high defender (who is covering the D-man in the middle who is about to take a slap shot) and then get a high-percentage shot away , or it works to draw the defenders out of position and feed a pass down low to either side for a prime chance from the slot ...or a one-timer from the far side. It works a LOT. Several other teams employ this regularly as well ( MaCkinnon). It's perfect for a guy like Ehlers or Connor. It all comes down to practices and working on the timing of the high arc as the puck is moved around btw Dmen.
I've seen Connor do it a few times and maybe Ehlers once or twice. They need to practice this a LOT more . It really helps destroy the box . The 1-3-1 is good but Jets need more movement . |

Kirill Kaprizov out 3-4 weeks for the Wild. I never like to see anyone get injured but there is no doubt that it's not good news for Minny.
The opportunity is still there to make the playoffs but the Jets really need to win a couple of these upcoming games against some very good teams.
...and Bowness should sit Pionk and play Capobianco. No brainer ! |

Agreed, and more accurately said....." I believe that Capobianco is good enough to be in that younger rotation into the Jets lineup.....hopefully at the expense of Pionk."
....although Pionk has looked good tonight so far
As for Kyle Connor ....note to self .......Slashing doesn't look good on the ole Lady Byng resume. |

Playoff-style hockey last night against the Panthers, who are very similar team to the Jets in many ways. The biggest comparison might be that they are loaded with talent and should be way higher in the standings than they are, year after year but seem to underachieve.
Big big win, and the team showed tremendous character. Now we cross our fingers and hope Morrissey is just a short-term injury.
Edit: There might be the occasional defensive mistake but Scheifele has really brought it this year. Even though one would say Morrissey should be a lock for Captain, both JM and Lowry are already signed here for some term so maybe that C is best put on MS's jersey. It's a lot harder to walk away from a team when one is named Captain. He might have to wait years again to get it elsewhere.
Namestnikov style of play and tenacity last night reminds me of a well know player from the Bruins..... Kenny " The Rat" Linesman . Gets in the muck, scores goals, works hard, irritates players, takes penalties, and a decent measure of skill, etc. I never see him chat on the bench though, even leaves his mouthguard in. Very focused individual.....definitely not the Namisticoughcoughcough I thought we got. Pleasant suprise. |

Credit Wheeler on that TB goal. No way would he shoot, so might as well pass it back to the D with TB defender coming at Pionk full stride and Pionk having no room left to maneuver. Brain dead. |

I just finished yelling at the tv. Now we give them a pp as well. |

I was thinking similar tbh, Schief has brought it this year and his work along the boards, deep in the OZ in puck possession is second to no one. Its amazes me how he can retain the puck or dig it out. That takes sheer brute strength along with the talent. These last wo games I was thinking, man, they better pony up for another 6 years at 10 or something similar. He's nothing short of awesome. Ya, granted there are some lapses, but new coaching re-energized him.
Couple of thoughts: If Gus can play like these last two games, that is the game he needs to bring every game. I haven't seen him play much this year as he is always injured but he displays that hockey IQ of knowing where to go, where to be, etc.
NN and NMKTV also have that hockey IQ of where they need to be and where to go, like anticipating the future play. I would like to best describe it as "Statsny" type of hockey IQ. They have hockey smarts.
Jets like to inflict pain on themselves like the former captain making that terrible pass that ends up being a breakaway goal, Ehlers in the Florida game at 12 seconds left in the first when he decides to go to the bench gliding past two Florida players that quickly turns it into a 2 on 1 as the Wpg D was the only defender remaining (Ehlers would have ben the 2nd defender but he decided to absent mindedly glide by the 2 Panthers) and Helle makes the save at 10 seconds left in the period.
If you have a chance to watch it again, do so as this is what I mean where I have to scratch my head and wonder, what is going on upstairs? |

Scheifele is great! I remember all the pitchforks that were out for him last year. Definitely my favorite Jet.
Namestnikov and Niedereiter have been great! Both guys are fun to watch. I do think the Jets need to do something about their puck possession. For some reason or another the play always looks like its in our end. Hellebyuck is definitely this team's MVP.
