15 games to make up 5 pts to take over 4th from ANA. Gonna be tough, but very possible.

Hey at least we are getting closer to getting a really good player. Perhaps Will "Slappy" Smith!

6. William Smith, C, Usa U-18 (NTDP)

Mar. 17, 2005 | 5′ 11.75″ | 178 pounds | Shoots right

January 2023 Ranking: 5

Tier: Projected top of the lineup player

Skating: NHL average
Puck skills: Above NHL average
Hockey sense: Above NHL average
Compete: NHL average
Shot: Above NHL average

Player comparable: Evgeny Kuznetsov

Background: Smith is the No. 1 center and leading player on this year’s U.S. NTDP team. He has been one of the most productive players ever in their U18 season with the program. Smith was invited to USA’s world juniors camp but was cut. He is committed to Boston College.

Analysis: Smith is a dynamic offensive player who stands out every game with his talent. He has tremendous puck skills, vision and overall offensive creativity and projects to be a major asset on an NHL power play. He skates well and makes so many high-difficulty plays at a strong pace, which lends well to his pro projection. Smith is a high-end passer who is also able to finish chances from the dots. The only real wart in his game is I wouldn’t call him an overly-physical or high-energy player. I don’t think he lacks effort. He’s around the puck a ton whenever he’s on the ice and even at times killed penalties for the program.

I don't think we can draft a player with only an average NHL compete level. How does that help the team be a hard team to play against? What will the other teams think?

Nowhere in that write up does it say he has and average nhl complete level. And would t know until he is at that level.

Torts won't be the HC when the team is relevant. He serves a purpose right now, which is to accumulate losses. I hope he continues that trend.

I am curious whether Smith can over take Carlsson. Of course, there is the Michkov question. Michkov had the best under 20 season in the KHL history. Better then Ovie. Cristall and Benson could be in the mix of 4-8 range.

se it thanks. the ranking at the top. was reading the write up where the person states he doesn't lack effort. but again. won't know until the kids plays in the nhl. these rankings, while helpful do not always paint the correct picture.

Eagles are apparently releasing Slay. I hope the there is larger plan in place.

Hargraves gone too. All before Hurts even gets paid. When you get to the Super Bowl you have to win them. Losing 3 out of 4 trips is a tough look. Then again it's certainly better than losing your last 6 Finals appearances.

The late Alexei Cherapanov had 18 goals and 29 points as a rookie (although it was still the RSL at the time, not yet KHL). Michkov has 9 goals and 20 points, albeit in 17 fewer games.

I do trust Howie and all the maneuvering that has to be done with cap. Maybe it’s part of a release and a signing with Slay on a new contract. Losing two of those three SBs to Brady and Mahomes is tough but understandable.

In general, it's about putting in high effort, mostly doing things that are physical or less glamorous, such as being hard on the forecheck or in puck battles.

I saw a tweet where Michkov's pts/gm was the best for an under 20. Obviously, your hockey history knowledge is better then mine.

On a whole other note. Is it me or does Hart get the flu a lot. Someone needs to teach that kid how to amp up his immune system.

You think Torts is bad as a coach. If Major Pain were his coach and Hart claimed he was sick, he’d make him do 50 push ups to boost his immune system.
