I'm going to point out that the Islanders' strategy is entirely based around interference - minor trips, hooks, holds and pretty overt picks. If you watch the first period up until the Acciari hit on Nelson, you could probably have called about 8 penalties (in 2005) against the Islanders and another 2 or 3 against the Leafs.

Acciari goes for the hit and Nelson turns into it. It's a penalty all day every day - but I'm also going to add that I still don't know why or how or what the checking player is expected to do. Once you are physically committed to the act of legally hitting a guy, if the player being hit pivots or ducks and puts themselves in a vulnerable position . . .I don't know. You really don't want to see anyone get hurt, but at the same time players need to be more aware out there than they are these days. Christ I feel that I was more aware when I was 11 than some NHL players these days.

He always said defenders should be able to grab a guy if you were going to shove him into the boards - so you could hold him up and make sure he didn’t go head-first.

I always thought it made sense.
