John Marino was dealt for a third and Ty Smith last offseason.

I do agree though the price for rentals and significant upgrades at the deadline came at a premium. Hence my “all in” comment.

Any of the d-men worth trading for were either rentals or Chychryn who went for an arm and a leg.

- Swedish_Jesus

We'll see what the analytics department comes up with re: players like Marino and Smith.

We already know the duo of Jokiharju and Bryson aren't it.

They need another top 3 defender who is already really good.

Was the price of Fiala a rental price, or was it that Guerin wanted a top quality defense prospect in Faber as part of the deal?

It's not just rentals that are costing quality defense prospects that the Sabres have none of.

Honestly no, but the season was supposedly a growing year. Youngest team in the league year.

Vegas certainly didnt have us as a 1 point miss.
Analytics department probably spoke up on 8 game pointless streaks.

Glad they looked at Quinn and peterka. 2 studs

- Boss34

When it was clear they had fully recovered from the 8 game losing streak and they had proven they weren't just lucking their way to wins, why was there no ability for management to change the perspective they had before the season began?

We all understand what the team looked like before the season started.

What I don't understand is the seeming inability to pivot by game 50, when the team had fully shown their worth, and many of their top players were having career years.

“All in”. Lmfao I just can’t with this guy. Once again, for the people in the way way back… KA tried to bring in a difference maker at the deadline and couldn’t. The entire world is aware of what a whiff that was. Except you and 2 other guys swirling their head in the Kool-aid punch bowl.
- SoCalPucks

I'm 0k with him having "whiffed" on Chick-fil-eh.
It is becoming concerning to me that he has a string of deals (trades & contracts) he hasn't been able to close.
The bigger picture is more concerning than any one in particular.

I mean context is important, Faber wasn’t signing in LA so to them it was a sunk cost.

I am curious if he gets Dahlin locked up this offseason. That’ll be telling. He’s done a solid job with Tage and Cozens. But the whiffs are a concern.

The above is not nearly as easy as it seems with how much the value of defensemen, both NHL level defenders and prospects, has risen the past few seasons.

And it's not just trading for them.

Many teams seem to want a quality prospect defenseman in return for big players.

Look at some recent big trades for examples of the above.

"conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, a conditional second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft."

For a top pairing D man. To me, that is pretty cheap

The last thing I would ever consider myself is a koolaid drinker.

I’ve been very realistic with my expectations since day 1 on this website.

You mock me for saying “All-In” yet say Adams whiffed on players that would have costed multiple players and picks. Would that not be going all in from a pick and asset perspective ?

Meier is an RFA this offseason, Chychrun had two years of term.

Debrincant has a $9M qualifying offer that walks him right to UFA if Ottawa can’t get him signed long term. Meanwhile Kasper, Korchinski, or Savoie could have been a Senator for the next 10 years.

All the incessant moaning and complaining and I doubt people will even care two years from now when they are watching a perennial contender.

Powerslave comes back from a hiatus and pretty much called everything that’s happened since he’s been gone, says a lot.

The Blues were trying to give Vince Dunn away for years and then lost him for nothing, all for him to be one of the best d-men in the league this year in Seattle

It's good to know that Adams learned from the mistakes he made in his first offseason as GM.

Yes. He has, I think so too.

I do wonder why poster don't give ample consideration to the hand KA was given on day 1 and the complete lack of support staff he had during that 1st year to help navigate a shipping taking on serious volumes if water in very rough seas...his critical support turned out to be a frigging con artist.

Imagine taking over a large IT division ( your dream job), being told to fire 80% of your staff and management team, then being told to rely on a Senior IT Consultant with a fabulous resume in turning around Sales organizations...which you learn later is mostly fabricated BS.
Oh, and keep the running expenses for the org at historic lows so you can't hire back but a few people.
I wonder if performance would suck? But yes, it would be all on you right?

What he call, that we still haven't made the playoffs, are Defense is still pretty bad, that he didn't have to go all in to make moves this year that could have helped. Are Goaltending was a mess until 10 games left in the season.

Yup.
He looks great in that system and would have looked good in this system under Granago.
But he played like dogs poop in the system that was here, hence the trade out.
A giant miss using 20/20 hindsight.

It’s the best time of year to be a Sabres fan, the spotlight is on management and they love it.

Adams would win the hearts of fans and more importantly players if he would chase this in the offseason:

Whyyyyy in the world would the Sabres do such a dumb thing?

Adams have proven over the last year. The kids are not for sale. He openly said it about the coyotes / Chychrun at the deadline

I will say. All of our prospects might not make it. We don’t have enough room on an nhl roster for all of them.

But they aren’t trading a player with 2 years of professional hockey experience

has any nhl team been awarded that 2nd round pick because the first round pick refused to sign with the team before?
