heads up, as good as the shutdown of the Islanders play has been this year (gross), Mayfield was horrendous on the PK. Worse than any defender mentioned this morning by a mile.

His even strength D was pretty decent though.

I bet he gets a bloated FA contract like Gudbranson got. Which... holy hell.

My guess, Mayfield gets somewhere around 4 million. Maybe 3.5

I don't see a use for him here. Between Boosh and Stillman, they fill any role Mayfield would or could.

He did. Sutter's coaching style once again sank the Flames and inflated the value of all of his defenders.

If they're looking to retool their team (I'd definitely not rebuild there) he could be a prime target. For the Sabres, he absolutely should be if there's any inkling that they'd be willing to listen.

You're right that they shouldn't trade him. But as mentioned, if they decide to listen, prepare to throw the sink at them. Offer Kulich.

I don't think you can judge if you really lost your love for the Sabres off this season. They are being managed a lot better, but winning the stanley cup is still not an organizational goal.

It became clear very early this team needed help to make the playoffs this season. Every time they won a bunch of games to make things interesting, they immediately dropped back down the standings. It was obvious the team had massive holes in PK, defensive zone coverage, and especially in goal. Even casual fans saw it, but the organization showed no interest in trying to actively pursue a playoff spot with off ice moves.

It would have been relatively simple to bring in a vet on a 1-2 year deal on the back end to stabilize things, or a reliable 3rd line penalty killer to help an awful PK, or, you know, an even semi-competent journeyman goalie. All three of these things would have cost under 10 million combined, wouldn't have prevented them from paying their young guys, and we would have been talking about a very good team with a chance to be dangerous in the first round. Even just a journeyman goalie in December would have been worth 2-3 points and a playoff spot.

Yes, they could do almost nothing and probably make the playoffs in 2024 with Levi and some further development alone. But then we will get bounced in 5 games by a 1-2 seed and told how great the experience was for the young guys to 'taste playoff hockey'. At some point moral victories have to turn into real ones or fans can't keep deceiving themselves into having excitement.

I honestly cannot remember a time this organization was trying to win as hard as the other teams around them. Even the Drury and Briere sabres didn't spend to the cap and didn't bother adding anyone meaningful for either playoff run. That team lost to a Carolina team that loaded up for the playoffs.

I got to a point with the Bills I just didn't care that much. Even the Tyrod Taylor 9-7 team that ended the drought didn't make me feel different. I care now, because they are actually competing. The bills compare themselves to the Super Bowl winner every year. That's the mountain they try to climb, and even when they fail, you get the excitement of trying to climb the mountain.

So cut yourself some slack.

The bottom six can and be adjusted from internal options if need be. But Adams has the Assets to upgrade there if he chooses, just think that part is a bit harder than Defense because of all the Forward options here already.
