What If that generational talent turns into Alexander Daigle? - Hawk4life
What if he turns out to be the best ever? You've got to take him |

You know everyone is hyped by Bedard, but what if he turns out to be the next Alexander Daigle? Or the next Billy Beane. He sounds really good on paper and in juniors but what if he flops in the NHL? - Hawk4life
It's the chance every NHL team takes.
They're trying to predict the career trajectory of a 17/18/19 year old. A good scouting staff will have more hits then misses and there is always going to be that kid who tore it up in juniors only to be a non-factor in the NHL. It happens.
IMO building a team via the draft is more reliable then building one through free agency.

Yay ... Trollfest is here .... this is awesome.
Oooh man, what if he turns out to be Tom Lysiak ... what if he turns out to be Dale Tallon, no wait, how about Doug Wickenheiser ..... maybe even Eric Lindros ....
Lysiak- ok maybe he was a #2 or whatever- I'm not looking it up -- who's that dude the Blues took ahead of Toews- what if he's that guy ... this could go on for awhile I guess. |

Then the entire hockey community was wrong, not only KD. Based on increased ticket sales, and I am sure jersey sales once his name is called in the draft, it is already a positive for the Hawks off the ice.
He gets the same ELC that all draftees get, so not like he is getting a $10 million dollar advance before producing. |

Anything's possible. However, on the flip side, other than say Nail Yakupov, how many absolute busts have there been in the 30 yrs since Daigle was taken?
Seems teams have devoted more resources and money to scouting where you don't see as many absolute whiffs at the top of the draft like there were 30 yrs ago with players like Daigle and Patrik Stefan.
Plus as a fan back then, unless you were able to attend games for yourself, you didn't have the benefit of watching those players like you do today with the availability of all the footage and content generated online. So you pretty much had to take whoever's word on said player.
I don't think you refrain from taking Bedard because of "what if?" Especially if your question is "What if he turns out to be the next Alexandre Daigle?"
What if you trade down and take Fantili and he becomes the next Radek Bonk? |

His character sounds an awful lot like Johnathan Toews - paulr
Thanks for the link, 2 minutes of quality information on the new guy. |

You can take BPA and it also affords them the opportunity to take someone they like that might be a longer term projection, like they did with Rinzel at last year's draft.
He may not work out but seems like that was their shot at a true boom or bust pick/player. - HawkintheD
I know, this is great, while rebuilding we get the pleasure of watching a uber talented kid play hockey this year. Best of both worlds.
Wonder if our left side will be Vlasic, Kaiser and Phillips?
Right side looks good with Seth Jones and yes I'm going to say it Murphy, he looks way better with KDs system. Zaitsev can be 3rd pairing guy.

100% The Hawks have to take Bedard, unless some kind of HUGE red flag comes up.
We don't know what he will be exactly, but very unlikely that he will be a huge bust. He may or may not turn out to be that "Generational" player, but we won't really know for a while. Part of the fun is the unknown.
The Hawks were extremely lucky on Monday to get the 1st overall pick. The tank job doesn't always work out, but I guess KD was listening to Michael Scott & Wayne Gretzky because the organization took it's shot and didn't miss.

Bettman had to be a man of his words....of the bottom 4 teams Chicago had the most wins. Tanking does not pay!

Please trade the pick now to his hometown franchise as they will sell you the entire team for him. |
