Colorado is at fault for poopting the bed and Dallas just needs to take care of business now. - JRR1285
I have no ill will towards expansion teams doing well. If Existing GMs are dumb enough to expose good players (Especially in Vegas's case) that's the fault of the GMs and the league. |

Think as if you’re a Buffalo and Vancouver fan. Expansion teams I think 52 years ago? And to have to watch these brand spanking new teams on the cusp of a cup and you’ve never won one? That sucks man.
I think Vegas has made the final four 3 out of 6 seasons now? They said is last night. TB is perfect example. They sucked for like 10 years before they sniffed much. The expansion rules weren’t even in the same stratosphere as they are now, they won but it took a few bumps and bruises along the way. Idk it just bothers me to boot they got high picks in rd one. Which I’m fine with, but they got to pick from a pool of really good players |

They had no choice tho. Good players were available whether they liked it or not |

A point per game from a center is a great luxury to have on your team. That does not put him in the superstar realm though. He's elite for sure. - picklerick
I guess injuries have slowed him down, but he was on path to being a superstar. I would take him over zib 100/100 times

Robertson, Eichel, Tkachuck, Barkov all super stars - nyrangers2
My list of superstars
McDavid Draisaitl Pasternak MacKinnon Rantanen Crosby Malkin Kucherov Mathews Ovi Kaprizov Tkachuk
Of course guys like Robertson had a great year; but I wouldn’t say he’s a superstar yet |

Anaheim chose to keep Cam Fowler over Shea Theordore.
Florida, chose to keep Alex Petrovic over Riley Smith and Johnathan Marschault
Minnesota chose to keep Marcus Foligno over Alex Tuch.
Pittsburgh willingly exposed Marc Andre Fleury.
Choices were made. |

I think the argument being made, not giving my opinion on it, is that the parameters for the expansion drafts were such that SEA and VGK were put in much more advantageous positions than they should have been. Making it unfair to other crappy, small market teams that have been in the league with little to no help for a long time. |

Jan,
I will draft for Columbus if you need someone. |

I'm not sure how Panarin isn't a superstar. He had a bad playoffs but if we're looking at playoff performances get Matthews off that list. Marner is absolutely a superstar also. I would disagree with you on Robertson too. That kid is legit.
You also only listed forwards so we can stick to that but Makar, Fox, Heiskanen, Hedman are superstars also.

Seattle paid $650M for a team. Vegas paid $500M. Small market teams that bring no revenue to the league are not getting any sympathy from the other owners compared to Seattle and Vegas who have lined their pockets over the past couple of years. |

Oh I understand the rules made it easier for Vegas and Seattle. But those were publics choices made by those teams to make the wrong decision. Vegas was going to take Petrovic. Florida traded them Smith and a 4th and then allowed them to take Marschault. Vegas was going to take Foligno. The wild said no on, here is Tuch.
Hence my original comment. Not the fault of George Mcphee that his coworkers panicked and made terrible choices. |

With that being said, how do you grow small market teams? Or do you not even try? What is the point of them? |

No one is blaming the GMs of the expansion teams for taking who they took |

Pickle said that the expansion draft rules were favorable to the them while small market teams suffer. I pointed out that the expansion teams have contributed more to the NHL owners bottom line than those small market teams have, and for that reason expansion draft rules were put in place to make them more competitive from the start than say Columbus or Minnesota. Didn’t think it was that controversial of a take… |

Got it.
I'll say that in both cases the "expansion drafts" were pretty universally panned at the time they happened. |

The thing is too, the talent pool is much better all around than say 20 years ago. So they could still have good teams with less to have picked from. These teams were too good out of the gate is my problem. In a nutshell
But you’ve kind of stated what I mean so thanks! |

For sure and I was just pointing out the reasoning behind the rules as far as I understand it. Wasn't arguing, just adding to the conversation.
In terms of small market teams they tried to fix some of the issues with the salary cap/floor. It's working to some degree but there are things that are too difficult to fix. Many players will want to play in big markets, or for an original 6 team and it makes it difficult for smaller markets to attract and retain talent. There's nothing the league can do (that I can think of) to change that.
Having said that, there are some small market teams that do it well. Look at Carolina. They build from within, have a coach and management that players like to play for and they don't rely on signing big name free agents. Then you have Arizona who can't even keep a building for their team to play in. At a certain point it falls on poopty owners rather than the market. |
